Elizabeth (Betty) Dowdle Willis Maxwell

April 9, 1941 - August 31, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Born April 9, 1941, in Greenville, SC, Betty passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Daughter of William and Sarah Willis, she lived abroad for much of her childhood due to her father's military career, especially cherishing memories of Japan. A 1963 Duke University alumni, she taught history at Garringer HS in Charlotte, where she met her husband, Raymond. Betty co-founded Bet-Nan, an arts and crafts business, and was an active community member, particularly with the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary (SAWA). She is survived by her sister, 3 children, 5 grandchildren, & 2 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held in Charlotte and Columbia. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephens United Methodist Church, 6800 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC on Thursday, September 5 at 11 a.m. Graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 7100 Garners Ferry Road, in Columbia on Friday, September 6 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be sent to SAWA, C/0 Diane Thomas, 6800 Burlwood RD, Charlotte, NC 28211.
