Janet Taylor Obituary

Janet Taylor

December 28, 1946 - April 16, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Janet Taylor (née Sawyer) passed away on April 16, 2024, in Austin, Texas. She was born on December 28, 1946, in Richmond, Virginia. She was a loving mother to her children Lockwood and Caitlin, a doting grandmother to Sledge, Eason, Grant, and Clark, a caring sister, aunt, and a devoted wife to the late H. Grant Taylor, Jr.

Janet was a force. She was a fiercely independent woman and a loyal friend to many. She was an avid Tar Heel fan, a cocktail connoisseur, a bookworm, and loved spending time at the beach. She is remembered for how deeply she cared for others and her community volunteer work. Janet had a love for adventure and had recently travelled to China, Croatia, and Scotland. Above all, Janet loved her family and delighted in her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments.

She met her husband Grant in Durham, NC, and they married in 1973. Over their 41-year marriage, they made homes in Olympia, WA, Washington, D.C., Memphis, TN, Lubbock, TX, Charlotte, NC, and Highlands, NC, where Janet had countless friends.

Janet was an alumna of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Memphis. She worshipped at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her children and grandchildren, Janet is survived by her sister Kathie Shumate, nephews Ryan and Eric Shumate, her daughter-in-law Holly, son-in-law Killian, and beloved canine companion Barley.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charlotte Learning Collaborative and World Central Kitchen.

Janet will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

I am so sorry to hear of Janet's passing. We were good friends when she and her family lived in Memphis and still exchanged Christmas cards. I always loved seeing the pictures of her, her children and grandchildren pictured in her Christmas card each year. The world has lost a special person. Janet was a loving family member, a good friend, warm, intelligent and down to earth. Knowing Janet was a special privilege and I will miss her.

Janet was a wonderful friend and neighbor when we lived in Memphis. We spent many wonderful hours with her and Grant while our kids played in the other room. We remained friends after she moved away.

Janet has been a wonderful friend and a delightful nextdoor neighbor since we moved to Highlands four years ago. Our day was incomplete without a quiet conversation with Janet....and a nuzzle from her constant companion, Barley. There will definitely be a void in our Highlands´ days for a long time. Our heartfelt sympathy to Janet´s family.
