Mary Castanes Obituary

Mary P. Castanes
Mrs. Castanes age 92, was born June 30, 1914 on the island of Samos in Greece. Mary Pepergias moved to the United States as a young girl, living in Charlotte, NC as a teenager. She relocated to Charleston, SC and married Angelo Castanes at age 18. Together they owned and managed a popular corner grocery store during the 1940's and '50's. Mary raised two children during this time, and enjoyed entertaining for her friends and family. After the death of her husband, she returned to Charlotte where she became very involved with Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She spent many summers helping to bake the delicious foods and pastries in preparation for the annual Greek Festival. She also taught Greek School at the church for many years, and was involved in the church's charitable works through the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was blessed with many good friends and continued entertaining in her home as much as possible until her health became poor.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Angelo, and her two children, Johnny Castanes, formerly of Forest, VA, and Connie Carras, formerly of Charlotte. She has five grandsons, and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service for Mrs. Castanes will be held on Tuesday April 24 at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The Trisagion will be Monday evening at 7:00 PM at the Cathedral.
