To the Washington family my true condolences, these past five and a half months have been tough, life without Mr. Washington at Northwest School of the arts has not been the same, neither has the chorus group, I was a student of his in grades 6 through 8, and with help from his class those years were the best three years of my life, I have so many great memories because of that man, his heart was bigger then his mouth, and we all looked at him like a grandfather, a father and a true mentor, all the love and respect in the world Mr. W. R.I.P.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As I sit here at my sister's home in Victoria, British Columbia, the funeral for my dear friend is occuring. Unfortunately, I cannot be present physically, but I'm definitely present in spirit.

Michael was a dear friend for over 30 years, and our years together at Northwest will always be fondly remembered. He was a true inspiration to both his students, their parents, and his fellow teachers.

In his last few months on this earth, Michael and I visited many, many times. Each time, I went to try to bring a little happiness to him, but I left having received so much more. He was a true gift in my life and I'll miss him very much.

May the peace of the Holy Spirit be with all of you who loved and admired him.

I was present the day Michael Washington taught his first class at Cochrane Jr. High School. He was larger than life and I could never have anticipated the effect he would have on my life. No doubt he had that impact on every child who was honored to have him as a teacher and a mentor.

I owe him so much as he is the very reason I became the man I did. It was his character and belief in his students that made him a most honorable man by every definition of the word.

My deepest sympathies go out to his family and please know, his life made differences beyond measure.

I will miss you my friend. Your spirit will live in the hearts of those you touched.

I was quite surprised and saddened to find out that Michael had passed. What a talented person he was. He very well could have had a successful theatrical career, but chose to be an educator. There are those of us who will not forget the contributions he made to the CPCC Summer Theater. I had the great fortune of being a part of the cast for the CPCC "Purlie" production Michael was super excellent as Rev. Purlie. I also remember the Washington family invited the entire cast and crew to their home for a celebration after the run -- and did we have fun. To the Washington family, thank you for sharing Michael with us. I pray that the Lord will strengthen and comfort you.

Some people you think will live forever because of their wonder spirit. I thought Michael was one of them. But no man knows the day nor the hour of their life beginnings. He has moved on to a better place where he now has the power to watch over us all. My prayers goes out to the family. Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.

To the Washington Family: I am deeply sadden of the passing of Mr. Washington. He has been in my life for a couple of years through my daughter (she was his student at NWSA). His passion for music made his strive to bring out the best in all his students. He might have pushed them extremely hard, but it was because of the talents that he saw in his students. They wanted to excel and he wanted them to excel above and beyond their expectations. I would stand at the top of the black box and watch while they practice and sometimes it might get frustrating waiting on your child to finish, but at the performance, it would be so awesome, that the joy you see in the children eyes, would be worth every minute of the time you had to spend waiting on them. He pushed his students to a level that if they had a school competition they would be ready for any challenge that came forth. They could not only succeed in school, but in college and the outside world. I had talked with him when school started and told him if my child didn’t do what she was suppose to do to call or email me and he kept his word. He pushed the kids, but the outstanding performances were awesome. I was sadden to hear of his retirement and I am truly sadden about his passing. He has left a joy in my heart for the passion of music and learning. His memory will be with me at every play or musical that I attend, and he will be in my heart always. I am happy that I got the chance to know him. Just remember, God loves to honor a joyful noise as well and he always picks the ones that give their all. May the Lord comfort and keep you at your time of sorrow.

November 19, 2009

Mr Washingtons talents were beyond compare. He was strict, he pushed his students to their limits but brought the best out in each and every one of them. You will be missed Michael. The angels in heaven have the best choral teacher there ever was. God bless you Michael we will miss you so very much.

Mr. Washington was quiet a man. He understood the value of presentation and the importance of good manners. He tried to instill in each child he taught the ability to move freely in all circles of life. When he stepped onto the podium on Northwest School of the Arts for a performance, you knew you were in for a musical treat. Ann Seagle

November 18, 2009

Michael 's legacy is his ingenuity in music and voice as well as his commitment to perfection in all that he undertook. He volunteered his time and talents in the production of the history of St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church, "Answering God's Call." This is an enormous loss to the St. Michael's Church family, Michael's students and the greater community. Michael's love and honor will live on in our hearts. My prayers are with his family and they should know that this loss is suffered by all who had the blessed pleasure of knowing Michael as a friend. Pam Hunter, Charlotte,NC.

Mr. Washington worked his students but the outcome was so worth it. He forced them to do their best and for my son, I truly appreciate it. I will never forget the way the choir lifted "TOTAL PRAISE". My prayers go out to the Washington Family. GOD BLESS YOU!!

November 18, 2009

Mr. Washington was a man truly dedicated to his calling in music. There were times he would frustrate me with his demands for his class (my daughter was one of his students). But I learned that all he did was out of love for music and if he saw something special in his student he would push them even harder. The things she learned in his classroom was very useful to her in church as she learned the ins and outs of music tech. His passing was not in vain as he instilled in her a drive to become the best and as a result she chose Choir as an additional major this year. He will be truly missed by all of his students. Mr. Washington you are now with God and probably conducting the most beautiful choir there is. May God keep you and your family. - The Thorns
