Patrick Flynn Obituary

Patrick Flynn
Get Over It!
Three simple words Patrick would say about his death. That's the way he lived his life, getting over the simple things, overcoming the major obstacles and appreciating every breathe he took. Patrick died on Friday, August 5, 2005 at Duke University Hospital. He was inspirational to all who knew him. Born with Cystic Fibrosis, the disease never defined him. Patrick broke records recovering from a double lung transplant surgery. Months later, he was back playing competitive soccer and teaching his daughter how to swim. Patrick overcame more obstacles than most people could even imagine. All the while, never once complaining. Patrick loved life and lived it to the fullest. Patrick was 36 years old when he became an angel and is now playing soccer with his brother, Michael.
Patrick amazed his family for the past 36 years. His legacy will continue with his five year old daughter, Mackenzie and his wonderful wife of 10 years, Christy Flynn. He also leaves behind in CELEBRATION of his life his parents, brother and sister. While Patrick has left this world, he will always remain in our hearts.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, August 8 at St. Patrick's Cathedral, 1621 Dilworth Road East. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Please wear bright colors. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 PM Sunday at Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel with visitation following until 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Life in Limbo Foundation, Patrick Flynn Memorial Fund, 4634 Quail Run, Lenoir, NC 28645 (lifeinlimbofoundation.org).
Arrangements are in the care of Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd., online at www.hankinsandwhittington.com.

Our Miles went to Christ United Pre-School with Mackenzie. And Patrick's testimonial was that his life revolved not around his disease, but his family. His illness was never apparent, he never paraded it around like a shroud. He always showed a gentleness and equinamity that drew all the children to him. "Mr.Patrick", they would call to him, to look at something or just to get him to pay attention to them. Finally, I noticed they dropped the "Mr" and just started calling him Patrick. I watched as he always got down on the child's level, and looked into their eyes, as if he understood what they were thinking. As a Dad, who was always there, taking an active role in his childs life, I'm sure he got his share of quizzical looks, myself included. But now I understand. And if I learn one lesson from the way Patrick lived his life, it would be to value each precious moment that we have with the ones we love. Thank you and God Bless

I worked with Patrick for many years at Bank of America. I just found out today and I am so sorry to hear the news. Christy and Mackenzie you are in my prayers. I know you meant the world to him. We will all miss his vibrant personality and passion for life.

I have such fond memories of Patrick and his family as our across the street neighbors in Carmichael. The wonderful thing is that my son, Eric, and Pat (and their families) have remained friends since the boys were small children. Pat and Eric had fun making forts, digging in the dirt, and spending a lot of time playing with the neightbor kids on the court where we all lived. I will remember Patrick as a little boy with a cowlick and a hearty, belly laugh who grew into a strong, happy guy with the same belly laugh. Heavenly soccer to you, Patrick! Love, Mrs. B.

Dear Flynns,

They announced prayers for Patrick at All Saints but I wasn't sure it was your Patrick till now. We are so sorry for your loss. Our prayers are with you. Patrick was a fine young man. We watched him grow from St. Pius thru working at our local bank in Dunwoody. God Bless all of you.

You have our deepest sympathy.

Hello Patrick's family, I did not know Patrick but I was drawn to the picture in the newspaper of Patrick and his daughter. My daughter is four and was just diagnosed with cystic fibrosis this year. Patrick sounds like he lived his life the way I want my little girl to live her life. His story sounds so inspirational. Have a blessed day!

My heart goes out to Christy, Mackenzie and all of Patrick's family - I am the grandmother of a 15 year old with Cystic Fibrosis. From what I read, Patrick made each day the best day possible, and was the best person he could be, one day at a time, one breath at a time. God blessed him, God bless all of you.

Pat was the first person I met in 7th grade at OLA, and we quickly became friends. We lost touch over the last 10 years or so, but I know his life was complete with Christy and MacKenzie. I think he would tell you that he had grabbed the brass ring, that he was truly blessed with his family. He was one of the good guys and I will miss seeing him at our 20 yr. Pi-Hi reunion. Your friend, Pat.

I have always had fond memories of Patrick. Patrick was an inspiration and a warrior who loved his family more than anything. I am blessed to have had a friendship with him.
