Richard Thomas Obituary

Richard Lee Thomas "Dick" CHARLOTTE - Dick Thomas passed away October 16, 2017, after a brief illness followed by cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Nyberg, and three sons - Nicholas (Jackie Koenig), Alexander (Candace) and Michael (Elizabeth), his brothers Charles and Donald. Dick's parents, Beverly and Sallie Thomas, predeceased him. Dick was born in Maryland April 14, 1953, and grew up in Barnesville, MD. He attended the McDonogh School, a boys boarding school in Baltimore. After working as a fire extinguisher repairman, he attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, graduating in 1976. He received his MBA from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. Dick fully embraced his career in the paper industry, serving in leadership roles at Champion International, Willamette Industries, Weyerhaeuser and Domtar. He retired from Domtar in 2016 as the Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing. After retirement, Dick volunteered as a Y-Readers tutor, served on the board of K12 Charter schools and took post-masters courses at UNC Charlotte. He was one of the founding members of the Positively No Dancing Fantasy Football League, currently in its ninth year. Dick had a larger-than-life personality and lived exactly as he wished. He was devoted to his family, his friends and his work. Dick was a mentor to many, led by example every day, and left an indelible impression upon those lucky enough to know him along the way. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dick's life at a memorial service Saturday, October 21, 1:00pm at the Sanctuary Lodge, 10450 Wildlife Road, Charlotte, NC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Dick's memory to your favorite charity.

I was so sorry to hear of Dick's passing in the Dickinson magazine. Dick and I were fraternity brothers at Phi Kap, played football together, and were good friends throughout our time at Dickinson. We reconnected briefly years later in Wilton CT , where our children were in high school. Dick was an intense person but combined with an easy sense of humor as well. He marched to the beat of his own drummer. I just liked him. Lots of memories arise of course of our time together , and I'm sad that his passing came too early. Condolences from the Beneke family to Dick's entire family.
