January 11, 1932 - March 25, 2024
Charlotte, North Carolina - Sue Rhodes Coppala, 92, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024. Sue was born on January 11, 1932 to Mattie Lore and Martin Luther Rhodes in Lincolnton, NC. Sue graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. While in training at Presbyterian Hospital, she met her future husband Leonard Wilson Coppala of Charlotte. They wed in October 1952 and were happily married for 39 years until Leonard's death.
Sue and Leonard raised 5 children. Family was the center of Sue's life. Her patience, compassion, generosity and loving sweet demeanor defined her as an extraordinary caregiver, wife and mother. Her life centered around her family, friends, and church.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Wilson Coppala (March 1991,) her son David Ralph Coppala (June 1982,) and her sister Peggy Rhodes LaDew (June 2019.)
Sue is survived by her children Stephen Coppala, Lynn Theobald (John), John Coppala (Lisa,) and Catherine Choudary (Adnan,) her six grandchildren Michael Theobald (Kaitlin,) Andrew Theobald (Kirsten,) Cameron and Mary Coppala, Anna and Makayla Choudary, her 3 great grandchildren Finley, Jonathan and Drew Theobald and multiple nieces and nephews.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Holy Angels, 6600 Wilkinson Blvd., PO Box 710, Belmont, NC 28012.
A celebration of life service will take place on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. at Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Rd, Charlotte, NC 28211.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.
