William Sellers Obituary

William Sellers CHARLOTTE - William (Bill) Sellers, 65 years old, of Charlotte, passed away on January 5, 2013, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. Born July 30, 1947, Bill was preceded in death by his father, Marvin S. Sellers, and mother, Ethel T. Patat, and sister Shirley S. Horniak. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Judy Dunn Sellers; and sons, Rodney Sellers and wife, Deanna of Charlotte, and Brian Sellers and wife Nichole of Kings Mountain. The love of his life was his three beautiful granddaughters, Kristin of Charlotte and Zoe and Regan of Kings Mountain. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Susan Dunn and brother-in-law, John Horniak plus numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews and cousins in Wingate, Cherryville and Whiteville, NC. Bill retired from Canteen Corporation after 30 years of service in 2010 but returned to work in 2011 on a part-time basis. He retired again in October 2012 due to his health. He made many lifelong friends while working at Canteen that have been a source of support during his illness. Bill graduated from Garinger High School in 1965 where he played baseball on the 1965 Garinger High School State Baseball Championship team. He also played on American Legion Post #9 in 1964 which was American Legion World Series runner-up and in 1965 for the American Legion World Series Champions. He was able to be reconnected with the former players in August 2012 when they were honored at the American Legion World Series in Shelby, NC. This reunion was a very special time for him. Bill was also drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1965 and played in the Minor League Organization. Bill loved sports and continued his love by coaching his sons and many other young men and women at the Derita Athletic Association and the Mallard Creek Optimist Club. He also spent many years in the stands at North Mecklenburg High cheering for his own sons as they inherited his love of sports. He also loved golf and looked forward to his weekly golf games with his buddies, Bob, Eddie and Steve and his semi-annual golf trips to Santee Cooper. He also loved family vacations at Cherry Grove Beach, the North Carolina State Wolfpack, the Carolina Panthers, Post 9, and the Atlanta Braves, but most of all he loved his family. A Memorial Service for Bill will be held on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013, at 3:00 pm at Harvest Community Church, 13301 Eastfield Rd., Huntersville, NC 28078, where he and his wife, Judy are members. To Sellers Family,
I never knew Bill personally but grew up in the 60's and followed the Post 9 play on radio. All those guys were my hero's and I played baseball but was never as good as those guys. I did play with Bobby Howser, Gene Sises, Bob Taylor and Van Kelly back in that time on a Colt League team. I graduated East Meck in 64 so we knew all about Bill Sellers. Judy I am Loretta Finlayson's husband and sorry I was unable to attend the service. We are so sorry for your loss.

When I saw Bill's picture, he looked so familiar - and then I read about Garinger baseball and how much that had to mean to him. Coach Tomanchek was my dad and our whole family still remember these guys -Gary Hill, Skippy Hull, Ronnie Lemmonds, Jimmy Easterling and all the other great players. Those were the best days and most lasting memories for all of us. Our condolences from the Tomanchek siblings.

You all are in my prayers..
