On this anniversary of an outstanding Holy Cross classmate and likewise terrific Naval Officer passing from this mortal coil, I again offer condolences to his wife and family for Dan, Dan was not only an occasional friend but someone who would go into extraordinary effort to help a friend like me 20 years after we last saw one another, I mentioned to Dan, I wondered if our days as midshipmen in the active Navy on ships and training as Marines and pilots in the summer counted for our retirement pay. Well, to be brief, Dan went into extreme research on the topic and provided me with forms and contacts to get Navy records during those years from 1955 through 1959. Well, Dan was right and my retirement pay took a nice jump as a result, including back pay.
Dan, I know you are up there in heaven helping other solve problems they had n earth, You are the best. Please put in a good word for me with our Maker, I know that will definitely help. Requiescecat in pacem, Great Dan.

I must admit I smiled when I saw this opportunity to say a word or two about a great friend and Holy Cross '59 classmate, CAPT Dan Nicholson USN. As my original post indicated in 2011, we met at Students at Holy Cross and as Navy Scholarship buddies. Outstanding is a word we both learned to use from our Navy orientation for top of the line people and performance. That word was perfect for Dan Nicholson. He worked hard, studied meticulously, and spared no effort to help or lift the spirits of his friends and I imagine, family as well. It's clear that a prayer to Dan on this memorial day is very likely to be answered as he rests in peace with his maker and others who have joined them in 2011 to this present date. In the light, Dan, please ask our Lord for a peaceful world this day and for the demise of the Covid-19 coronavirus. And send a bit more of grace as I approach the end of my residence here on earth, knowing it was blessed with our relationship. Pax tecum, my friend Dan

I was deeply saddened seeing Dan’s obituary in “Shipmates”, the newsletter of the USS Boston. Dan was my shipmate, my roommate and I was his assistant division officer. More importantly, we were friends. He was always upbeat and friendly. We had many good times together, especially during our two trips to the Mediterranean. I saw my first opera with Dan in Italy. When Dan was in the Philadelphia area, he would always stop by and we would chat about the “old” days. My wife, Elaine, and I send our deepest sympathy to Nancy and Dan’s family. He will be remembered.

When I joined Illinois Bell in 1966 one of the first people I met was Dan. We remained friends for several years. In some ways Dan was my mentor as before Bell I was in the Navy retiring from Bell after 25 years then becoming a CFP.
He will be missed by all.

Dan was one of my best friends at St George and we double dated for our senior prom. We went our separate ways until we met again at our 50th reunion, it was as if we hadn't been apart.

To my Uncle Danny:
You brought Grandma Helen Nicholson to my wedding some 32 years ago and you always looked in on my grandmother Irene Doheny who lived on Lake Shore Drive until she was 92 years old. She left to be with my Mom and Dad, Leo Nicholson, until she died in Laguna Niguel, California at the age of 95.
In 1980 you became the Godfather of my son, Michael Nicholson, now 30 years old.
In your travels, you landed at Los Angeles International Airport between flights and got to experience a real Southern California earthquake.
You made several trips to California and always made sure to visit my mom and dad and the rest of my family. In 2008, you and Aunt Nancy, shared your Marina Towers home with my wife Christine, my daughter Mary Nicholson and her fiancé, Jonathan Carmona. We had a wonderful time seeing the Chicago skyline, getting a tour of the city and a great dinner.
Not being local, you always made me feel like a special family member, as if we just lived across the street. A very special thing considering my parents left Illinois for California in 1963.
You were a wonderful Uncle and I thank you for the special memories of you and Aunt Nancy.
Rspectfully,

Thinking of Uncle Dan, my sisters and I were immediately flooded with these wonderful memories, particularly involving him and Grandpa P.J. The original "Odd Couple" as they were, the stories from the time the two of them lived together never seized to amaze us.
We always looked forward to seeing Uncle Dan and Aunt Nancy during our annual visits to Chicago and Lake Geneva. We also loved when they came to see us in Toronto; usually the whole family would go out to a restaurant. I clearly remember a time when Uncle Dan mistakenly thought the whipped cream served with his waffle was "special Canadian butter". Another time, Grandpa snuck sweetener into his orange juice and quietly chuckled as Uncle Dan proclaimed to everyone at the table that it was the best orange juice he'd ever had. It was always so much fun.
We'll miss Uncle Dan tremendously, but I like to think that those we love never really go away. They shine on in stories that never grow old and lighten the spirit.
We are very, very lucky to have known him.
Love, Emily, Tara and Bronwen

Uncle Danny was a honest, fair and gentle person. He will be greatly missed. We were lucky to have such a wondeful Uncle. He was probably one of the most trustworthy people I knew. The greatest gift you can give another person is your time. Danny was a tireless volunteer and so good to my Mom's mother - no relation to Uncle Danny but he and Aunt Nancy always found time to visit Grandma Hartnett. He was truly a great person! Love Katie

My sincere condolences to Nancy and the entire Nicholson family for the loss of a wonderful and generous person in Dan. He was a friend since our early years at Holy Cross College. We were both Navy scholarship students and had many memorable times at the Cross and in the Navy. Over the years we have stayed in touch from time to time and Dan was always an enjoyable and supportive friend. I will pray for his eternal soul and knowing him, will also ask that he prays for me from his perch alonside St. Peter. God love you, Danny. You are and have been a great and shining example to us all.
