Jacquelyn Mattfeld Obituary

Dr. Jacquelyn A. Mattfeld, 98, passed away in Edgewater, NJ on December 28th, 2023. She is survived by her two daughters, Stefanie Mattfeld & Felicity LaBoy; her grandson, Chano & his wife, Elena; &, her great-granddaughter, Nadia. Dr. Mattfeld enjoyed many lasting, loving, & meaningful relationships hailing from all age groups & walks of life. She was predeceased in recent years by some of her closest companions; Cecilia Lopez, Albert Farbman, & her beloved brother, David Anderson. She was an avid host, who loved entertaining her wide variety of friends; often inviting anyone without local family for holiday dinners. Dr. Mattfeld started her post-secondary education as a pianist, attending the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore but decided that performing was not her calling. She remained an avid patron of the arts; attending musical, theater, & art events throughout her life. Dr. Mattfeld received her undergraduate degree from Goucher College & doctoral degree in Music History from Yale University. Both degrees were completed in an era-1950s & '60s-when women were not expected to use their education nor exceed expectations in their professional accomplishments; Dr. Mattfeld did both. She achieved a rich professional career in college administration-primarily in several prestigious northeastern institutions. In the early 1970s, she achieved the status of highest-ranking woman administrator in an Ivy League university. Consistent across her career were her aggressive efforts at championing education for women, people of color, & later, students of non-traditional age. She returned to school & completed a Master's degree at the age of 71 in Gerontology, a field that captured her heart and imagination, for a second career administering gerontology programs at City College of Chicago. In her final employment, Dr. Mattfeld, with a long interest in Jungian Psychology, worked on the board & as primary administrator for the C.G. Jung Center in Evanston IL. Dr. Mattfeld donated her remains to Rutgers University's, Robert Woods Johnson medical school; contributing to furthering education & knowledge in death as she had in life.

Stef,
I just came across this obituary as I was thinking about you. I enjoyed hearing you speak so kindly about your mother during our times together. Hers was a life well lived and I am happy you were able to have your mom into your retirement years. My mom died last year at age 96, and I can tell you there is no death that compares to that of one´s mother. John, Johnny and I are sending condolences and warm thoughts of comfort you way.
