John Robert Hampson III

1939 - 2022

John Hampson 82 passed away peacefully on March 30,2022 at Ft. Dodge Soldiers Home, Ft. Dodge, Kansas. Born in Hinsdale, Il. on December 20,1939. He attended Hinsdale Central High School graduating in 1959. He briefly attended Eureka College before entering the US Army in 1963. While in the military, he served as an engineer for the Armed Forces Network (AFN) while stationed in South Korea. After leaving the army he started his long and highly decorated television career in the Chicagoland market. He worked for WTTW-Chicago (CH.11) where he won an Emmy award and a George Foster Peabody award for excellence in videography in 1979. He later went on to work for WGN-Chicago (CH.9) as the Engineer in Charge (EIC) in the news department, where he earned the nickname "Maddog" for his aggressive approach as a field cameraman. He was also a published author with his novel "50 Hours". He enjoyed purchasing houses and renovating them. He is survived by his sisters Ellanat Hampson Matta of Bluffton, SC and Sarah-Marie Hampson Keil of Dana Point, CA. His three children Julia Ann (Ronald) Tubbs of Lakin, Ks, Jennifer Lynn Hampson of Mundelein, Il. John Robert (Chandra) Hampson IV of Antioch, Il. He is also survived by 7 half-siblings, 9 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 9:00am-11:30am on Saturday May 28,2022 at Toon Funeral Home in Westmont, Il. Memorials can be sent in care of the family to Toon Funeral Home 109 N.
