Joseph Prost

1917 - 2015

Joseph William Prost passed away quietly Sun July 5th at the age of 98 after his beloved Cubs won their game. Joe was born on March 21, 1917 to Mathias and Mary (Krug) Prost and had 3 siblings, Marie (Dittberner), Henry (Bishop Jude) and Marcella (Spetz), all preceding him. "Joey" is survived by his loving nephew Paul Dittberner (wife Kitty), niece Patricia Spetz, and nephew Jerry Spetz (wife Sherry); grandniece Julia; step-nephew Steven, and step-niece Katie; and sister-in-law BVM Sister Jane Haslwanter. His beloved wife Marie (Haslwanter) passed away in 2002 after 55 yrs of marriage. He also leaves behind his beloved Ardmore Ave neighbors who loved and cared for him, enabling him to stay in his home until age 94. Joe a WW2 veteran, served with distinction for 239 days in Patton's 3rd Army, 80th Infantry Division seeing action in the European Theater and awarded the Solder's Medal and Purple Heart for saving a fellow solder after both were injured. He became a florist, operating Prost Florist on Irving Pk Rd; was a long time resident of the Indian Woods subdivision in NW Chicago; and member of St. Cornelius Parish where he was a Knight, usher and member of the Holy Name Society. A true gentleman, Joe was a "long suffering" cubs fan, having hitchhiked to see them in his youth but failed to see them win a world series. Two years ago, Joe became a resident in Clare Oaks retirement community. He loved all of his caregivers at Clare Oaks and his family wishes to express their deepest appreciation for the warm, loving care they provided him in his final days.
