Just found out in the A.F. Sergeants Assoc. magazine that Lorain had passed away. Wonderful woman. My wife and I both served with her in the 928th. Sorry to hear of your loss.
Chief Roger Coffman Rockford, Il
So sorry to hear of your loss. Your mother was such a sweet lady. The 1st time I met her when I was new at the unit I was shocked she knew me. I thought she really does her homework on personnel. Then she gave me this big smile and told me she knew I was raised in Hillside because she recognized my family name. Thank you Lorain for your service. God Bless you and your family.

I was really sorry to hear this news about Lorain. I remember meeting her and Mike at the Westin Hotel in 1999 at a USS Indianapolis Survivors Reunion; they were so warm and welcoming to all. This was also true visiting them at their house, sitting in the living room-- they loved to laugh. Lorain was always supportive and equally independent, and it seemed they always stood side by side to face what came. It was always a pleasure and lot of fun to be around them. Mike's story of survival is her story too. We once had an amazing lunch at the Union Club in Chicago, when Mike and other survivors spoke to the assembled League audience. Whatever we remember about the Indy is due to people like Lorain, who, with Mike, started in 1960, to reclaim the captain's name, and the memories of those who served aboard the ship. Our thoughts and prayers from our family, and from my mother and father, too, go out to the Kuryla and extended families.

Amelia and I were saddened to hear the news about Lorain. We loved both Lorain and MIke and had such fun times together at book signings with the both of them and the Enola Gay Navigator, Dutch Van Kirk.. Mike would say "I delivered It, he dropped It". We enjoyed hearing their stories as we drove to the shows and when they stayed with us. I remember how proud I was to drive them In our 1930 Studebaker only to run out of gas. Lorain was a great help to Amelia at the Atomic Bomb Group Reunions, she did not ask If help was needed she jumped right In.I remember the last Reunion that we had an orchestra, Lorain got up and danced with Bob Petrolli, In His wheel chair, she managed to whirl him around and they both had fun.
Our lives are much richer for having personally known them.

To Mike, Diane & Jody,
Sorry I couldn't be with all of you today. I will always remember the great times we had together all those years ago in Bellwood & Hillside. Your mom always tried to keep us boys in line, though not always successful. Hopefully she is reunited with your Dad and they are having a great time in heaven. See you all soon.

Lorain was a long-time friend and support person for our family. Our families attended school, celebrated holidays, and vacationed together. We cherish the memories of the fun times together and the strong family values that kept us all close. Thank you, Mrs. K., for the many years of friendship and love.
