Mark Brown Obituary

Brown, Mark Barrett 51, of Evanston, died January 17, 2012; Family Physician, beloved husband of Denise (Mathis); loving father of Kyla Dainnese and Cameron Barrett, adored son of Theodis and Coletha Gadsen-Brown (deceased); beloved brother to Marcia Bonita Williams and Michelle Brenda Brown, proud uncle and cherished brother-in-law. Growing up in the Chatham neighborhood of Chicago, Mark excelled in academics, sports, and music. An outstanding student throughout his education, he received full scholarships to Morehouse College, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and the University of Illinois Medical School where he ranked second in his class. He was an Alpha man in the oldest most respected African-American fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha. Although he was offered postgraduate positions at the most prestigious hospitals in Chicago, Dr. Brown became chief resident at Jackson Park Hospital, choosing to provide care for the underserved. As an Evanston resident, he relocated his practice to Saint Francis Hospital to be closer to his family. Mark will be remembered by all for his good deeds, loving kindness, and righteousness. He gave freely of himself for the benefit of all he encountered, and did so with loving care and purpose. Funeral services and interment were held at St. Mark's Methodist Church and Oak Woods Cemetery. A memorial fund for the college education of his children has been created.
