JIM FALLS - Trygg John Hansen, 65, Jim Falls, died of a heart attack Jan. 9, 2011, at his home.
Trygg was publisher of the Courier-Sentinel since 1974. He was an avid golfer with five or six holes-in-one and an active member of the Cornell Lions Club.
Trygg was born Sept. 28, 1945, in Jacksonville, Fla., the son of Henry L. and Charlotte H. Hansen.
Trygg was a 1963 graduate of Murray High School, in St. Paul, Minn., where he lettered in football, hockey and tennis.
In 1967 he graduated from St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn. At St. Olaf he majored in history, lettered in hockey and was captain of the hockey team.
From 1967 to 1969, he was in the U. S. Marine Corp, serving in Vietnam.
During training at Quantico, Va., he began his career in journalism, serving as assistant editor of the base newspaper.
Trygg studied journalism at the University of Minnesota from 1969 to 1972. During that time he worked in photo labs and did freelance photography.
In 1972 he began as a writer for the Cornell Courier and soon became editor. He purchased the Courier and the Cadott Sentinel in 1974 and has been publisher since, holding that position longer than anyone else.
He was proud of the surrounding communities and his newspaper and felt that he continued the service of his predecessors.
Two previous editors and publishers, Howard Sims and Walter Brovald, were professors Trygg studied under at the University of Minnesota and who set a high standard for community journalism.
Trygg is survived by: his mother, Charlotte; brothers Mark (Brenda) and David (Karen Lilley); and niece and nephews, Britta, Kell, Trygve (Jeanne), Per and Kip; and two grand nieces.
Trygg was preceded in death by his father, Henry.

Charlotte, David and Mark,
I just heard the sad news. I'm now reflecting on all the rich history of our friendship dating, as you know, from the sandbox at Fletcher Hall, the grade school pranks and trouble we managed to survive, to the High School days of shared deep snow in the neighborhood, Leech Lake cabin and water skiing, canoeing and hockey experiences. And this only touches the huge memory storehouse of the experiences we shared that I will now be reviving with fondness and sadness. I share your sorrow. He was one of my best and oldest friends. To-Charlotte, David and Mark,
I was so sorry to hear of Trygg's death. We visited with him with my mother, Ione De Money the last time we were in Minneapolis. We had so many stories to tell. When he was over 2 years old our families lived across the hall from each other in student housing at the U of Minnesota. My mother thought then he would be an excellent athlete and was smart too. I will miss a long time friend as we often talked on the phone over life in the publishing world, his newspaper background and my book background. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. Jennifer DeMoney McCord and her sisters and families.

Dear Mrs. Hansen, Mark and Dave,
My mother, Ione Edstrom DeMoney met Trygg when he was just about 2 years old. She enjoyed his sense of humor and his skills as an athlete even then. She was delighted to meet up with him again about 10 years ago when we were in Minnesota. I too had the chance to catch up with Trygg as we were childhood friends. I will miss talking to him on the phone as we talked about life, business and today's world. My thoughts are with all of you and your families. Jennifer McCord

Dear Mrs Hansen, Mark and Dave:
Trygg was my room mate for two years, and my closest hockey teammate for all 4 years at St. Olaf. He was a tough, savvy hockey player, our starting center for two years. Not too speedy, but a great stick and quick, accurate shot. He loved the game, and had the respect of all his teammates and opponents alike. As our starting center, more than once he was our go to guy. One thing that we joked about in later years was that he never wanted to wear anything but a cotton shirt under his hockey sweater, even in the coldest weather. If it was really bad, he might break down and put on a quilted shirt, but that was it. He didn’t want to get slowed down by too much clothing “I’m slow enough”.
Trygg was about the most loyal friend anyone could ask for. We always got together at our reunions, and transported ourselves back to the great days on the rink. It is heart warming to hear the really nice things from people that knew Trygg. I’ll miss him more than I can imagine.

I remember the many winter nights when Trygg, myself and some other boys would walk down to Langford Park to play hockey. Trygg was always a hard worker, motivated, and a great guy. He will be missed! I wish I could have known him better in his later adult years. My sympathies go with all of you who loved him.

David and Karen--
Our deepest condolences. The unexpected loss of a brother must be one of the most difficult burdens imaginable. Trygg was a wonderful person and we will remember his generosity and gentle humor. He was a particular source of stability and strength to Jonathan at the tree farm. May God bless you and Trygg and envelop you and your family in the shadow of his wings.
