Ilene Haluska Obituary

Ilene S. Haluska, age 65, formerly of Whiting, of Marion, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

She was born July 11, 1960, in East Chicago, Indiana.

Ilene was a cherished daughter, sister, and friend. She is survived by siblings Donald (Maureen Gannon) Haska (Haluska), Mary Beth (Mark) Bogucki, Dorothy Haluska, Andrew (Vikhanh) Haluska Jr., Thomas (Linda) Haluska; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Andrew Haluska and Anna Marie (nee Koval) Haluska; siblings: Patricia Haluska, Kenneth (still living, Lynette) Haluska, Kathleen Haluska, and John Haluska.

Her warm spirit, generous heart and quiet strength left a lasting impact on all who knew her.

A proud academic, Ilene graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1978, earned her bachelor's degree from John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio, and went on to complete her master's degree in journalism at Roosevelt University.

She had a dedicated career in journalism, working with Paxton Media Group, and most recently served as Huntington Managing Editor with Indiana Plain Dealer. Ilene was a one-man show who researched, wrote about and photographed Huntington County government, organizations and events, often at night or on the weekends.

Ilene had been a production editor for The Women of the ELCA, coordinator of educational publishing for RSES, medical copy editor for American College of Chest Physicians, publications assistant for The American Dental Association, and assistant editor for Mobile/Manufactured Home Merchandiser.

She also has volunteer experience at The Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana.

Beyond her professional life, Ilene had a passion for the arts and the outdoors. She loved movies, photography, hiking and biking. Her thoughtful nature, creative eye and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed by all who know her.

Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 3-7 p.m. at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave., Schererville. A prayer service will be at the funeral home Wednesday, July 30, at 10 a.m. Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. James the Less Church, 9640 Kennedy Ave., Highland, with Fr. Gregory Bim-Merle officiating. Services conclude at the church.

In honoring Ilene's memory, the family invites all who knew her to come together in love, remembrance, and prayer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.

Ilene had a generous heart and was incredibly kind to everyone. At family gatherings, she would often talk about photography and nature, her face would light up when sharing her love for those two passions.
My sincerest condolences to the Haluska family. She will be deeply missed.
