Oscar J. McCowans, 90, of Marion, was called to his heavenly home Friday, Feb. 4, 2022. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer.
He was born on top of Brushy Mountain, in Overton County, Tennessee. Oscar was one of 11 children born to the late Johnny Houston and Willie Mae (Pippin) McCowan.
During the early 1950's Oscar served with U. S. Army, 3rd Division. Oscar married Mary Louise Mahaffey on March 11, 1955. They had 53 wonderful years together until God called her home in 2007.
Oscar worked at the Marion Fisher Body plant for 34 years as a die setter retiring in 1992. He spent time traveling, fishing and gardening with Mary. He found his perfect service as an usher at Hillside Wesleyan Church until his health made him retire.
He loved his Lord, his family and his church family.
Oscar is survived by his daughters, Tereasa K. McCowans (Jim Alter), Marion; Lesa M. (Mike) Auler, Middletown; Jennifer L. (Rick) Young, Swayzee; granddaughter, Kalynn Auler; brothers, James Oliver (Jean) McCowan, Paul (Anna) McCowan, Argle (Charlotte) McCowan; sisters, Clara Dean (Hubert) Copeland, Donna Sue Copeland; sisters in-law, Faye McCowan, Roberta McCowan and Eva Jean Mahaffey; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Elmer and Dailey McCowan; sisters, Sally McCowan, Joanna Carmack, Elsie Jewel McCowan; brothers-in-law, Clarance Carmack, Freddie Copeland and Fred Mahaffey; sister-in-law, Dorothy Mahaffey; nephew, Charles Mahaffey. We would like to thank Visiting Nurse Hospice for their care and guidance. Also our adopted little brother Pastor Gary Bingham for his love and uplifting visits to Dad during his battle and friendship to all of us. He became family.
Visitation will be held from 11am-1pm, Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022, at Hillside Wesleyan Church, 2510 Home Avenue, Marion., Indiana. The celebration of life service will begin at 1pm with Pastor Gary Bingham officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Estates of Serenity Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
