John served his country as a private first class in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with an honorable discharge in 1953. In 1967, while on duty, a head on collision with a car abruptly ended his police career. His love of riding motorcycles endured the rest of his life and he was a vocal advocate of the Florida helmet law and safe riding. He is survived by his three children, John Corbo, Susan Corbo and Andrew Corbo; his sister, Ida Archacki; his brother-in-law, Joseph Armenio; his granddaughter, Isabella McKinley Corbo; his many loving nieces; nephews; and his former wife, Carmela Turco.
He will always be remembered for his humor and wisdom and deep abiding love of his family and friends who will miss him dearly. "Briefly we meet, hastily we part".
A visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, at the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Crystal River. Graveside services with military honors will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday April 8, at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Mr. Corbo, as he was known to us neighborhood kids, will always be etched in my mind as I remember him forty years ago. Full of fun and life and a with happy smile. I can still hear the sound of his voice.

I will always cherish the hours he spent with us, the countless button hooks, slants and down and out patterns we ran as he threw the football to us. The family parties, great food and fireworks on July 4th. The leisure time at the swim club.

My father and I wish him peace and offer our condolences to John, Susan, Andrew, Isabella and all of his extended family and friends.

Big John, it was a pleasure to spend time together with you and I thank you for the memories you left me.

JC Senior,
Since I met you I have always wondered how you are, from time to time we spoke, and I wish it were not such a long time that I have not seen you. I still have the rocks you made, save the one that lost it's eyes. Still have the rock, no eyes. You were a tough guy with strong opinions and a kind heart. The world will miss you and your stories.

"JC Pops" Thank You for being part of my two-wheeled life. I am glad John and my father got to know each other. They were very much alike.

I remember having breakfast with JC and he said this to me: "Isn't that thing itchy? It's gotta be hot in Florida?" I replied; You get used to it. There was a pause and JC said "I remember when you didn't have any hair." then he said "Ya Know, You're still you on the inside"

Thank You to the Corbo Family for letting me be "The Lanai Guy"

"JC Pops" You leave me with smiles, memories and tears. I'll see you there.

Although my friendship with you started when I was a young adult I still remember all the stories and the movies I play in my head from all the pictures and slides....I do remember all the times you squeezed my cheeks and how much I hated it...you were always kind and funny and always always had a good idea about a food business I should run.
Now that your gone the stories and pics will remain the same but no one will ever squeeze my cheeks the way you did... Thanks for all the memories...your friend and nephew. Michael S Turco

Even though Dad was a tough guy, every once in a while he would reveal his tender side and while giving you a big bear hug he would say, "Ummm, You know I love you." And while spending time with him these last few weeks, I turned it around and hugged him and said, "You know I love you." He responded by saying, "I love you too... I love you all."

And so...

I thought I would be prepared for the inevitable but
when one so close to you, someone who has been there your entire lifetime passes on, things change.
I have found that a little bit of myself has died with him…
But I have also discovered, that a bit of him lives on in me.

The following is a letter written in late 1978, while in the midst of a his divorce. It's dated:

December 15th, 1978

??To My Children:
John, Susan & Andrew:

?As the Christmas season approaches, we all think of happy times and family reunions. It is the season to be merry, but I know you three children are not too happy with circumstances being what they are.

?Although the trials and tribulations of life have separated us from each other, I sincerely hope that we still all care & love each other. Things may not be the way they were in the past but I know & feel there is a deep bond of love between us all.

It matters not if you all care for me as much as I care for you (all 3).

?For the joy of loving you all is the greatest thing that happened to me in my lifetime.

??????????Love,
??????????Dad.

JC Pops, no words could encompass your powerful presence. You were a patient teacher. A kind, loving, generous, and encouraging supporter who I am so grateful to - forever - have in my corner. To the best kind of grandfather, I will miss you more than I can describe (which means a lot considering how I share your passion for writing and words) and will love you always. I am so lucky to be your granddaughter.

t is with love, my deepest respect, and great sorrow, that I say goodbye to John Corbo Sr. I celebrate his life, and I am so grateful to have had the pleasure of having him in my life, he is a very special person. He taught me many things which continue to stay with me, such a gift, and I am grateful. As her Mother, I feel blessed beyond words for the boundless love he has given to his granddaughter Isabella.. For his thoughtfulness and the countless ways in which he has consistently cheered her on, enriched her life.. For sharing his thoughts and poetry which he shared with her generously, with humor, and with great wisdom, all of which will live on in her, always. As I write this, I am thinking that JC Pops is on a new and amazing grand adventure right now! And is surely making many others smile. I wish him infinite blessings, joy, and love on his path. And I wish the same for his children, and I am sending my love and my deepest and most heartfelt condolences to you all, to Aunt Ida, Uncle Joe and all who love and miss him. I will miss him dearly.
With much love, Camille

So soon after the loss of my father, this is difficult to accept. My mother grieves the loss of her brother-inlaw and my daughter and I share in that grief. My heart breaks for my cousins and my Aunt Ida and Uncle Joe. I know all too well what they are going through now. We love you all. Aunt Phyliis, Cousin Vicky and Cousin Victoria Anthony.

The Paradox of JC Pops

A man of paradox
tough guy, poet,
philosopher, motorcycle cop
just how did you invent your name?
my dear silly JC Pops!

One minute on the firing range
to shoot your .38
the next we are off to Mount Dora
Together antiquing, how great!

A poet's heart, a lover of nature
vanilla ice cream and Henry David Thoreau
Pondering life's mystery,
so few could only know
your soft side that loved rocks,
wood, birds, paint
and fresh mountain air.
even when I was not with you
I knew that you were there.

untameable free spirit!

The strength and justice you searched for
had your father stayed by your side,
thanks for being my best cheerleader
while I was embarrassed,
you were bursting with pride.

You taught me to dare and take risk,
while you stayed home,
secure in your safe little world.
You always said I was too sensitive,
it was never easy being your only girl.

No crying was allowed,
pedal pedal pedal,
that bike down rocky hill
Wipe away the memory of those tears
but tough lessons remembered still.

So now my tears may betray you
I do not want to let it show,
my sense of security so shaken
it's really hard to let you go.

From your bow the arrow shot far,
across ocean's infinite blue
I am glad you were my father
you lived your life
as you wanted,
and to yourself you were true.
