May God bless the Hanning family. I have great memories of choir with Mr.Hanning. I played piano for class in 1981 and 1982. While not always the most patient , he put up with my teenage frustration at playing the same passages over and over, till it was just right. He had an ingenious way of getting the students to pay attention. When we were boisterous and loud , he would SING. Everyone would immediately stop to listen, his voice was so powerful. He also had a way of nudging you to do more, be more than you thought you could. Not many high school choirs could handle the Carmina Burana, but we did. While at the All State Choir practice, I overheard other music teachers say how brilliant he was. He was. Musicians I have met as an adult have been amazed by what we accomplished as high schoolers. Know that he will live on through all his kids, professional musicians and amateurs alike.

My deepest prayers & condolences go out to the family. Mr. Hanning was truly a great teacher who will be missed. I remember when he invited me to sing at Groesbeck Methodist & everyone clapped. Mr Hanning later told me that that had not happened in over 20 years. It was under his leadership & training I know what I know, and have passed it on to others. May he forever Rest

Mr. Hanning was much beloved by so many of his students. His confidence in me shaped my life and encouraged me to go on and do things most only dream ... one of which was touring in the cast of "Up with People" ... He was an inspiration and beyond.

Love was in the music he taught. Love was in the words he spoke. He had this way of making every student he talked to feel special. Mr. Hanning made it cool to be a part of the musical journey at Colerain. Thank you for believing in me Mr. Hanning. You will be missed. Darryl

What a great way to invest your life. Mike made the world a better place, helped to change the lives of hundreds of young people, and blessed thousands with his music. What a tribute to you both. One writer said that the key to life is to "live, love, and leave a legacy". Mike did it with passion... I am a better person because I can say I knew him....John (Judy Colyer) Wolfe "54.

Sandy and family
I was heartbroken when I learned of Mikes passing. I have such fond memories of singing in the girls glee club under Mikes direction at CHS, remembering his powerful voice as the announcer at all the CHS football games and singing 'O Holy Night' during the Christmas services at Grosebeck Methodist. Mike was a wonderful man and a wonderful teacher, I will never forget him. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Sandy and family,
so saddened to hear of Mike's demise; have thought of you guys many times in the past years. We have been away from the area for 20 years now. Can't remember when we were last in each others company. Cousins should have stayed in more contact with each other.
We had wonderful times together at family doings when we were kids. Mike's mom and my dad were sister and brother.

Mike was responsible for bringing me to Cincy from Pensacola, FL. He and Sandy introduced me to my wife. He guided me thru a tough career move and made me such a better musician, a better teacher, and...most of all a better person. He was my "father away from home" and, having just lost my father this year, I understand all too well what we have all lost in Mike. May God bless him and keep him until we can sing with him again. We love you Mike.

November 6, 2011

What a great person Mike was. I met him my first year of high school, and he remained a friend across that year and into the next. In chorus my first year, he sang the tenor solo in "There Were Shepherds," and I can hear him singing it to this day. Rest in peace, Mike. My condolences to you, Sandy, and your family.

Mike was a wonderful inspiration to me. His energy, smile and high expectations of the music he created from us students, was amazing....He was the choir director at Colerain High School, when I attended there, and I so enjoyed singing in his Ensemble. I was especially blessed to have experienced his singing at the Groesbeck United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. He always raised the spiritual meaning of Christmas, when his tenor voice vibrated within all of us, as he sang "Oh Holy Night"

His presence will be missed my so many on this earth...My sympathy to all those closest to him...he is smiling now and continues to preform for his creator.

November 5, 2011

Mr. Hanning was a wonderful choir director and he taught me so much. His inspiration has made me a choir director. My memories of him start in junior high when he took over for our director when she left .....cutting his grass in the summer and to singing a duet with him when he went back to Miami University and I was there also. Singing with him made me feel as if I could sail away in the song.
Please accept my sympathy and my prayers for your loss.

My first paid singing came at Sandy and Mr. Hanning's wedding...I still have the cash which I taped into a scrapbook.

Love to you all,

Donna Roy (Losh)

Jay, Becca, and Birdie.... Hanning the Great will always and forever be a second father to me. I cannot recount a summer that didn't include him while I was growing up. Some of my fondest memories include our Hilton Head trip, the Old pink beach house... jamming to MC Hammer in the car, oh and who could forget the poisonous gas cloud? Oh Wait... what about rides in the station wagon??
I love you Hanning the Great! Heaven just gained an awesome man and wonderful teacher. God Bless you all.

Mr. Hanning, as I remember him from my days as a Colerain student was one of those special people you always remember. His smile and genuine compassion for the students will always be something I will remember. You learn many things from teachers that goes way beyond the subject they are teaching. When they are as inspirational as Mr. Hanning you learn how to find your passion and share it with those around you. Thanks Mr. Hanning for caring about us.

Mike Hanning was one of the best choral directors I've ever sung with. He made his work look so easy and fun, and inspired many of us to be music teachers and choral directors, following in his footsteps, and hoping to be as effective. I will always remember his command to sing with "pizazz." I find myself repeating that and other "Hanning-isms" here and there at rehearsals. The man changed lives and will be missed by so many. My sincere sympathies to his wife Sandy, his children and grandchildren and to his friends. -- Mary Bellman, Colerain class of 1976

Mr. Hanning, the best of the best - I was in his class, senior year...1969; what a delightful experience indeed. Singing at the mall, producing an album and being one of his students was awesome. After I graduated from college and moved to Chicago, NYC and then Connecticut, I went to visit my parents in Cincinnati and ran into Mr. Hanning at the chili parlor in White Oak, truly a pleasure as he and I recognized each other as if I was still his student. (He will always be my teacher) Loved him for who he was and I am sure he is in heaven - I guess I better behave myself so I can see him again...The angels just received the BEST of the BEST teacher/director available. God bless him and keep him!

Sending my thoughts and prayers to his family and all who loved him. He was a huge positive influence for so many people. He has left a great legacy of music and dreams fulfilled through him. I was one of those people whose life he changed for the better. Now my daughter is also following in those footsteps, as I pass along his encouragement to me and my talent, to her. What a great example he was for us all! Someday we will be singing in the choir he is already assembling for us. Cannot wait to have him direct me again, tapping his baton on the music stand in front of him, looking out and smiling and then...we sing! This picture is how I will always remember him. Our fun and light hearted music teacher! Blessings!
