I just saw this page - far too late, but anyway, want to help keep Todd's memory alive if anyone ever looks back at this.
I knew Todd from track at Oberlin College. He was a GREAT runner - and I was not - but he always treated me very well and with more respect that I probably deserved. I knew he had gone on to public service in Ohio. I had no idea that he was gone until I decided to just 'look him up' this morning. It was a real shock to find out that he is gone. Ironically I spent my career as a cancer researcher. It's really the disease from Hell, and cuts down the best of us.

Mr. Portune was always a genuine advocate for PUBLIC SAFETY in Hamilton County.
I always appreciated the opportunity to express the needs of Fire and Emergency Medical Services in the county and his accessibility and willingness to listen.
Not always agreeing with his approach--I was always aware of his integrity and the value of his commitment to the citizens served by the many Fire Departments in Hamilton County.
We are better able to do our job for his service.
Thank you for your contribution to our work and Rest in Peace Commissioner Portune.

My name is Larry Arnette; I used to do a weekly talk radio show on a small-publicly supported station in Cincinnati (WAIF-FM); I was in the minority as I was a progressive in a (generally) conservative town; I got an email once from Todd which I was happy to receive; he said he liked the show. I did talk politics a lot and always thought Todd was a much needed voice of pragmatism in a town that needed it (badly). He will be missed.

I will miss Todd's smile. I met him during my freshman year at Oberlin College. We both ran cross country together and then we were team mates on the track team for 4 years. Todd always had a smile for everyone and took time to get to know all of his team mates. He was always the top guy on our team and an inspiration. We ran together often to stay in shape for outdoor track during the cold winters in Oberlin. We both had red and yellow hats to keep warm. After Oberlin, we continued to UC and I would see him in the library or at the gym. I graduated from UC and moved west but I hear about all the great things I was doing in Cincinnati. I was sorry to hear of his passing and I know he is looking down on all of us smiling and encouraging us to continue doing what I best for the people we come in contact. My sympathies go out to Ethan, Ellyse, and Emma as well as his brothers, family and friends he left behind. Todd was truly a great man and I feel honored to have known him and been his friend and team mate

During the mid-1970s, I was a Madeira High School Track and Cross-Country Runner who competed against Todd for several years. Todd always won that day at the races...
Todd was always friendly and courteous whenever we briefly talked then and also several times in the past decade.
I always admired and respected Todd's friendly, level-headed, and direct approach in talking to all people he met to help resolve their concerns.
Todd, may the wind always be at your back as you move forward and Godspeed !
