Vickie STAMBAUGH Obituary

STAMBAUGH

Vickie Lynn Stambaugh, 59, died Sunday May 25th after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by many friends and family. Vickie was born to Robert and Betty Stambaugh, September 6, 1954. Raised in Montgomery, she was a 1972 graduate of Sycamore High School where she was a member of the softball, basketball, field hockey, and volleyball teams. She received a BS in Physical Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1976, and her Master's in Education from Xavier University in 1985. She taught P.E. for 30 years at Elmwood Place Elementary School in Cincinnati, retiring in 2006, and was the long-time girls' basketball coach for St. Bernard-Elmwood Place High School. Vickie loved and deeply cared for her students, co-workers, the children she coached, and the communities of St. Bernard and Elmwood Place. She was recently honored for both her legacy in coaching and commitment to the community, having her name inscribed on the gym floor at St. Bernard- Elmwood Place High School and the dedication of the Vickie Stambaugh Park in Elmwood Place. Vickie had a passion for life! She celebrated living life to the fullest every day. She was a tremendous athlete and coach, having been inducted into the Sycamore High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Norwood Sorrento's-Greater Cincinnati Softball Hall of Fame, Buddy LaRosa's High School Sports Hall of Fame, and the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place Athletic Hall of Fame for excellence in coaching. She enjoyed trail riding with her horses, rock climbing and golfing. Vickie was an avid Cincinnati sports fan, loved traveling to the Cayman Islands to scuba dive, and she loved to dance. Many friends describe her as the life of the party, saying that she's now "dancing with the angels". Vickie was preceded in death by her father, Robert Stambaugh. She is survived by her mother, Betty Stambaugh; her brother, Ron Stambaugh (Dawn); her nieces, Bethany Mercer (Jason) and Kelly Stambaugh; her wonderful caring family of friends - too numerous to list. Our sincerest thanks to Dr. Cynthia Chua, OHC and Hospice nurses for their kindness and care given to Vickie throughout her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to: HOSPICE OF CINCINNATI, INC. P.O. Box 633597 Cincinnati, OH 45263-3597 Or OVARIAN CANCER RESEARCH FUND (www.ocrf.org). A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2014, 2:00 PM at St. Bernard-Elmwood Place High School Gymnasium, Cincinnati, Ohio.
