Jimmy McMahan Obituary

Jimmy R. McMahan

Burnsville - Jimmy R. McMahan, age 77, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 17th, 2018 while surrounded by the love of his family at his residence. Mr. McMahan was born in Mars Hill to the late Veva Roberts and Hubert Lindsey McMahan. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters: Dorothy Crooke of Candler and Marjorie Robinson of Spruce Pine.

Mr. McMahan resided in Mars Hill for 72 years before relocating to Burnsville five years ago to be closer to his daughter. He held careers with A-B Emblem and Swissartex where he worked as a draftsman. He designed various emblems for numerous organizations including the Town of Mars Hill, as well as NASA. Mr. McMahan's relationship with the Lord was of such importance to him. He lived his faith everyday and set a wonderful example for his family. He was a devoted member of California Creek Baptist Church in Mars Hill and proudly served as a Deacon there for many years. After retiring, Mr. McMahan's kindness, tender heart and willingness to serve the Lord led him and his wife, Bernice, to open their hearts to children in need. Together they served as House Parents for Baptist Children's Home of North Carolina, where they were able to provide much needed and unconditional love to several children. Mr. McMahan also had a great love for his grand-beagle, Trilby. His "Little Sunbeam" as he called her, never left his side and was of great comfort to him, especially in his final days.

Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Bernice B. McMahan; daughter, Malena Robinson and her husband, James, of Burnsville; sister, Florence Fortin of Russellville, Arkansas; and brother, Hubert "Micky" McMahan and his wife, Jean, of Asheville. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 20th, at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Pastor Josh McDevitt and Pastor Glen Burrell will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 21st at 11 a.m. at California Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Baptist Children's Home of NC, 111 Sneed Dr., Clyde, NC 28721 or to Hospice of Yancey County, 856 Georges Fork Rd., Burnsville, NC 28714. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.yanceyfuneralservice.com
