Christopher Gentner Obituary

Christopher Nigel Gentner, 16, of Pittston, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018, in Janet Weis Children's Hospital, Danville.

He was born in Pittston, on June 17, 2002, and was the son of Carina Fortini his stepfather, Robert Wardell, and biological father, Christopher Gentner.

Christopher was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Parish Church, Duryea. He attended Pittston Area High School and was an honorary member of the Pittston Area Patriots football team, and a member of Wyoming Valley Challenger Baseball.

Chris enjoyed playing his PlayStation. He looked forward to spending time with his grandfather on their weekly visits to the GameStop store. Chris was also a talented artist and enjoyed constructing Legos. He was a diehard New England Patriots fan, and also a Golden State Warriors fan.

Christopher had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is considered one of the most serious genetic diseases in children. He spent most of his life in a wheelchair. Despite the pain and challenges he endured, Christopher was strong. The light of his spirit quite literally lit up the room. He was utterly beloved. Those who knew and loved him were captivated by him and deeply inspired by his willingness to live so happily - to smile and laugh and to fully enjoy and embrace each day of his life. Most would agree that Christopher was a living example of the triumph of the human spirit and a constant reminder that we are more than our bodies. To say that Christopher will be deeply missed is an understatement. His loss will be felt deeply by his family and grandfather, who was his best friend.

Christopher's life, and the grace with which he lived it, will never be forgotten. Although confined to his wheelchair, he certainly navigated his path with the ease, happiness and grace of a soul utterly blessed by God. When we think of him, may we remember and call upon his strength when our own paths become difficult to walk.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Aidan Wardell, and sister, Aliyah Gentner, both at home; and his uncles, Eugene Fortini and his wife, Alice (godmother), and Robert Fortini. Also surviving are his maternal grandparents, Karen and Eugene Fortini; his paternal grandmother, Angel Wood; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Christopher's family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Maxim Nursing Services and also Janet Weis Children's Hospital, Danville, for their kindness and excellent care that Christopher received.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Muscular Dystrophy Association, 222 S. Riverside Plaza, Suite 1500, Chicago, IL 60606.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Kiesinger funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date.

Didn't know Christopher but came across his obituary and am touched by how beautiful it is. He sounded like a fine young man that went through more in his short life than anyone should have to. What an inspiration he was. May God bless his family at this difficult time and know others are praying for you and thinking of you.
