John Rowlands Obituary

Coach John D. Rowlands, 80, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Monday, March 21, 2022, at the Gardens at Wyoming Valley, Wilkes-Barre.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, a son of the late John and Dorothy Davis Rowlands. John was a 1960 graduate of GAR Memorial High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Susquehanna University. Prior to his retirement, John was employed by the Wilkes-Barre Area School District as a teacher, football coach and athletic director at GAR.

John was actively involved in GAR sports for over 30 years. As a high school athlete, John earned 11 varsity letters. He was a three-year starting player and captain for the football team. He was a two-year high school wrestling team captain and a 1960 district wrestling champion. He was also a co-captain of the GAR track and field team. John had been elected to the Head Coaches All-Team Team for three consecutive years. In 1959, he was selected to both the local All-Scholastic Football Team and to the All-State Football Team.

John's prowess earned him a football scholarship to Susquehanna University. There, he earned All-East and All-State honors, playing at the team's center and linebacker positions. He was a charter member of the Susquehanna University Sports Hall of Fame.

John served as an assistant football and wrestling coach at Wilkes College. He then served as an assistant football and track and field coach at Coughlin High School.

John was named the head football coach of GAR Memorial High School, his alma mater, in 1970. As GAR's head football coach, John's teams won many Wilkes-Barre city titles, six consecutive Wyoming Valley Conference Division II championship titles, an undefeated season in 1976 with a state championship title and a state championship title in 1978. John was honored as Coach of the Year several times and was selected as the Sunday Independent Coach of the Year for all sports. He was a three-time Unico Game Coach and a coach for the Big 33 All Star Classic. John served as a head track and field coach from 1973 through 1974. As the track and field coach, his teams won the Wyoming Valley Division II and the District Championship in both years that he coached. He left coaching in 1980 to become GAR's athletic director. John was inducted into the GAR Wrestling Club's Hall of Fame in 1982. In 1989, he was appointed assistant commissioner of the Wyoming Valley Football Conference. John's long association with sports as an athlete, coach and administrator has produced nothing but admiration and success.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert W. Rowlands, in 1990.

Surviving are his nephews, Rob Rowlands and his wife, Maggie, Wilkes-Barre; Brian Rowlands; niece, Carla Puscavage, Wilkes-Barre; sister-in-law, Leah Rowlands, York; longtime companion, Sallie Price, Nanticoke; seven great-nieces and nephews; cousin, David L. Davis and his wife, Virginia, Kingston; and numerous colleagues, friends, former students and players.

John was an inspirational man,who commanded great respect, taught about doing the right thing,I think John invented that concept!...He was genuine and sincere, caring, and in the High School Assemblies,it was absolutely just captivating to listen to him express himself, and listen to his words of wisdom,no matter how old you were, you felt like John was talking to you directly one on one, when he would take the microphone and speak to hundreds of people ages 12 years old to ages 65 plus,he had a tremendous sense of wisdom, practical knowledge, and, was most satisfying to listen to,over the years,he dispensed helpful advice to thousands of people,I felt extremely fortunate to have been around John, for some 25 plus years,as a fellow faculty member @ G.A.R. Junior/Senior High School,in Wilkes-Barre,Pennsylvania,the city of my birth.Rest in Peace,Sir,I´m sure he shall be in Heaven, with or,Lord and Savoir, and GOD,and the Holy Spirit.

I was sad to hear of John's passing. He was great coach, competitor and teacher. His teams were always well coached and tough. We had many tough, physical games and a rivalry that brought out the best in both teams. John was always a class act.

Mr. Rowlands
You were such an inspiration to so many "young people", (as he would call us in class.) You really hold a special place in so many hearts. A true son of the blue and grey.

The definition of a mam's man. The man I had come to respect the most. Never played a down for him and yet he treated me like I was his MVP. He was much more than a coach, much more than a teacher !
May the fish be biting and bucks be monsters!
