Pepper was a graduate of Wilkes College in 1969 with a BS degree in Commerce and Finance. While at Wilkes he played football as a defensive end, earning all MAC honors as a member of "The Fearsome Foursome" of the "Golden Horde." They were the awarded the Lambert Cup and Timmie Award, and went on to win a National championship in 1969. He and his teammates have been inducted into the Wilkes Athletics Hall of Fame.

Mr. Merrill started his professional career with General Adjustment Bureau as an insurance adjuster working in several cities before establishing Merrill Associates, which he operated for over 20 years in the Kingston area, retiring in 2001.

He was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Nanticoke, and attended the Trinity Lutheran Church in Titusville, Fla., where he and his mother maintained a winter home. He was the first coach for the Nanticoke Mini Football program and had coached Little League baseball, Youth Soccer and Softball in Kingston. He was also an avid Penn State fan and held season tickets.

He was preceded by his father, Paul W. Merrill, in 1982, and an infant brother, George.

Mrs M, sorry to read about the loss of your son. He reminds me a lot of you. In his life he spent a lot of time working with the youth of the area. Sounds like a great man and a great son. May he rest in peace knowing that his mission here on earth is now complete.I know your grandchildren will rally around their Nana helping to take away some of the grief. My Prayers go out to you and your family.

I played football with Pepper for three seasons at Wilkes (I graduated '70). Although we never developed a friendship off the field, we 45 or so guys were like brothers during those intense seasons. Pepper was a huge part of our success and certainly added his special spice to the team.

I send my deepest condolences to those who loved him.. I also send my prayers that the pain of his loss will quickly pass and leave only the sweetest memories for his family of times with him .

In Christ,

The Reverend Dr. George E. Conway

Mrs. Merrill & The Merrill Family, Our Deepest Sympathy to you & your family on the death your beloved Pepper. While I knew Pepper from Nanticoke HS class of '65, Jack & his family got to know him when he played football with Jack's cousin, Bill Layden at Wilkes. Those were wonderful years, not only for their winning streak, but also for the friendships that were formed. Friendships that continued thru their lives and now hopefully after. Please know you are in our Prayers. Pat & Jack McAndrew

Dear Sweet Doris, Heather, Paul, Toby, Susan, Olivia, Emma Jane and Morgan,
May all the wonderful memories of Pepper fill your hearts and minds, bringing forth many smiles for many happy moments. Though we've heard many lovely things of you - We personally know Pepper only as the amazing son he was to Doris and the kind hearted, God loving man he was at St. John Church. Therefor we are equally certain that he was also an amazing father and grandfather. Please know my families thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time. God be with you all. Dearest Pepper may you and those whom you've reunited with bask in the light of God's eternal Love. You will be missed dearly and remembered fondly.
With deepest sympathy The Ercolano's,
Matt, Reina, Amara and Sorrano
