Susan "Sue" Dickinson Zerfoss, 57, of Shavertown, passed away Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 2019, in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Sue was born Oct. 6, 1962, to Helen Dickinson and the late Tom Dickinson in Kingston. She was the youngest of two children and a life resident of the Back Mountain. She graduated from Dallas High School and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Bloomsburg University.

After college, Sue began her career of teaching hearing-impaired students at Dana Elementary School. Sue is survived by her husband, Rod Zerfoss; daughters, Ashley and Sarah Zerfoss; sister, Jean Mekeel and husband, Richard; and mother, Helen Dickinson.

Yesterday a beautiful light was extinguished with the passing of my dear friend and colleague Sue. A giant in the teaching profession for over 30 years. She made a huge impression on virtually every student that ever set foot in her classroom. She had unfathomable courage, strength and positivity while battling cancer with an absolute lack of self pity. She was a cherished colleague, but more importantly one of my best friends. I have countless years of amazing memories that I will keep close to my heart forever.

Dear Zerfoss Family,
May the Good Lord wipe away your sorrows and bless you with peace during this time. Years ago, I had the privilege to learn from Sue as a student teacher. Her love for educating children with hearing loss was truly remarkable and many lives were positively changed. She shared her gift of teaching and without a doubt, made this world a better place by being the advocate and the voice of deaf/hard of hearing children. Because of Sue's ambition and dedication to her profession, these children were given the chance to succeed and to overcome the hearing difficulties in life. Your family is in our prayers!

God Bless!

Sue was the best teacher my Grandson could have ever had, she took an awkward hearing impaired child and gave him the knowledge and confidence to over come all obstacles in his way. We will always be grateful and will remember her with love.

Sue was an amazing person and an inspirational teacher. Her light will forever live on in the accomplishments of the students she taught and in the hearts and minds of those of us lucky enough to have collaborated with her in education.

I was blessed to have had the opportunity to work with Sue. She was truly one of the kindest and most dedicated professionals I have ever known. She will certainly leave an emptiness in the world that will be difficult if not impossible to fill. Prayers to her family, friends and co-workers that will be greatly saddened by her physical absence. Sue may you rest peace and soar with the angels.

My son Jerry was a student of Sue's at the LIU preschool in Dallas. He would never be where he is now at the age of 20 if it wasn't for her. She was beyond wonderful and did awesome things with the children. I am so saddened by her loss. She will always be a special person to my family. Heaven truly gained an angel.
