Larry Akerstrom Obituary

Larry G. Akerstrom, 70, Topeka, passed away August 26, 2011, at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. Larry was born November 12, 1940, in Topeka, the son of John and Lola (Krause) Akerstrom. He graduated from Topeka High in 1958. Larry married Karen K. Gerdes on June 25, 1961, at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. He owned and operated Superior Carpet Service. In 1971 he received the Sears Installation Excellence Award. He bowled in many leagues and was inducted into the Topeka Bowling Hall of Fame in May 2008. He also had two holes in one, the first on September 12, 2000, and then again on November 20, 2010. Along with enjoying golf and bowling, he was an avid fisherman and racing fan. Survivors include son, Brent Akerstrom (Terry); daughter, Tammy Freed (Curt); brother, Michael Akerstrom (Liz); sister, Karen Senogles; grandchildren, Don, Amber, Scott, Angela Akerstrom, Jared and Jordan Freed; great-grandchild, Ariana Akerstrom and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola and John; wife, Karen Akerstrom; brothers, Bob and Jerry Akerstrom. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd., Topeka, KS 66614. Funeral service will be Thursday, September 1, 2011, at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Topeka Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Lodge and Valeo Drug and Alcohol Recovery Center, sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to www.kevinbrennanfamily.com. Larry G. Dick & I used to play cards with Larry & Karen . Were devastated at the loss of Karen . Just a few short months Later we last another dear friend , Larry .

My thoughts and prayers go out to the whole family. He was a great uncle growing up to me and I will greatly miss him. I will miss seeing him through the week at Caseys, and the ability to stop by and say hello to Larry on my way home from work! I am glad I got to be there for not only Larry in the end but the whole family as well. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all through this tough time.

Hello Brent and Tammy, I used to work for Larry when I was in High School. I so enjoyed being around him and Mickey and Richard.It was a very memorable time. My deepest condolences go out to all of Larry's family. I had never met him but had talked to Brent a couple of times.
John, Larry's Dad was my Grandmother, Edna Amelia Akerstrom-Fox's brother. My
beloved grandmother passed clear back in 1968 at the age of 70 and I miss her every single day of my life. She was a mother to me. May all of you be blessed and comforted in the coming days.
