Phil Marti Obituary

Phil Marti Phillip R. Marti, 65, of Clarksburg, Maryland, a longtime Senior Program Analyst for the IRS passed away on April 16, 2014. Born and raised in Topeka, Phil graduated from Topeka High School in 1966 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1970. Phil retired in 1997 from the IRS. For most of his career he worked at the IRS headquarters in Washington, also spending years in both Chicago and Los Angeles. Phil worked with legislative policy as well as procedures for implementing new laws affecting agency operations. He was a member of the Clinton Administration's Healthcare Reform task force in 1993. Following his retirement, Phil returned to Topeka to care for his parents, Kenneth and Grace Marti, until their deaths. He returned to the Washington area and lived in Clarksburg for almost a decade. He took freelance assignments offering advice and commentary online for The Motley Fool. After singing with the Gay Men s Chorus of Washington, he later volunteered in an administrative capacity. Phil also volunteered to help elderly and lower-income people complete their tax forms and enjoyed reading to first graders in a local elementary school. Phil was a big fan of theater, travel, gourmet cooking, playing cards, and pet sitting for friends. He is survived by his brother Bill (Dian) Marti of Yankton, South Dakota, and cousin Barbara Gibson of Newton, Kansas. Funeral services will be May 23 at 1 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, Topeka, with a memorial service to be conducted May 31 at 1 p.m. at All Souls Memorial Episcopal Memorial Church in Washington, D.C. Phil and I shared many joys. We met through the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC, in its inaugural year, 1981. We quickly discovered shared joys of bridge and beauty (uh, excuse me! SCHOLARSHIP) pageants. Phil even lived with me briefly when he returned to the DC area from Los Angeles, while he was looking for a condo. Together we made FUN times happen--and frequently. Gone TOO SOON. But I quit smoking cigarettes after his death. I got the message. Phil was a joy to many people.

I met Phil the first year of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington, DC. That would have been 1981. We quickly discovered that we shared the joys of bridge and Miss America and General Tso's chicken, as well as a few other things it would be just downright TACKY to mention here. Sharing parts of our lives for 33 years was a great joy to me, and I will always remember my buddy. I still don't know why he answered "What is Designing LADIES" on Jeopardy, but I bet he never forgot which country has the greatest number of American consulates. It's Mexico, and it was the Final Jeopardy answer which he missed, giving him a Michael C. Fina tea service which he gave to his mother. Lots of memories here, my dear friend. Rest in peace. I'll be along shortly, but not TOO shortly, I hope. And I know a lot of bridge players who are already there.

I send my sympathy to Phil's family. He was a longtime friend of our family's. My brother, Chris, graduated from Topeka High with Phil and then Chris and I both moved to Washington, D.C. where we remained good friends with Phil. He was just a great guy who cared about people. He will be missed.
