In 1974, my friend Draven and I went on a WestPac on the USS Chicago to Kenya, Mauritius, Pakistan, Guam, Hawaii, Singapore, Diego Garcia, and the Philippines. Everywhere Draven went he wore his tinted glasses. The Brother had a great Afro and was simply super cool. The attached picture shows the way Draven looked back in the day when we were running partners in California. Long live the memory of Draven McCall! God bless his family and may his soul rest in peace!

I first met Draven in the Navy's Boot Camp in Orlando, FL. His homeboy "Tate" was in my Boot Camp Company along with Jeffrey Jackson from Birmingham, AL. After Boot Camp, Draven, Jeffrey, and I were stationed together for three years on the USS Chicago CG11 first in Long Beach, CA and later in San Diego, CA. Draven and I became very close and even rented a house together for a while from his aunt in San Diego. In our house, one heard a lot of Jazz and Blues. Whereas I loved to listen to Jazz, Draven loved the Blues. He even told me that one of his goals was to return to Jackson and open a Blues Club. Draven was a great friend and was "super cool" as the saying goes. During our days in San Diego, Draven drove a beautiful Black Pontiac Lemans. That made Draven as "fly" as ever. I have not seen Draven since the 1970s. However, we did talk on the phone from time to time. One of our last conversations was in 1988 around the time his daughter was born and my son was born. I deeply regret that I did not manage to see my old running partner before he made his transition to what Gil Scott-Heron referred to as the Otherside. However, my fond memories of Draven will stay with me forever. I deeply appreciate our shipmate and friend Jeffrey Jackson for letting me today about Draven. God bless the family of Draven and may his soul rest in peace!

Draven was a good friend and a smart man about all things "outside". We always had a chat when he came by and he had such a great smile. He really loved Mike's Bar-B-Que sauce! We will muss him. Our deepest sympathy to Rita and all the family.

I remember the first time we met so many year ago at the Alamo Theater on Farish Street. We gave you a ride home and that was the beginning of a bittersweet relationship. Rest in Peace my dear friend Rest in Peace.
