James Henderson Obituary

James David Henderson

Pearl

Jimmy Henderson, 61, passed away unexpectedly on March 5, 2016. Visitation with family will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. on March 8 at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl.

Jimbo was born in Jackson on May 20, 1954, the third child of T. W. and Beatrice Henderson. He grew up in Pearl, graduating from Pearl-McLaurin High School in 1972. In his early years he made a profession of faith and was baptized at First Baptist Church of Pearl. At age 11, he began playing the guitar under the guidance and instruction of his father, the most important musical influence in his life. After high school, Jim was recruited by Butch Stone Management to play with Ruby Starr, and one year later joined Black Oak Arkansas and began touring the world as guitarist. After the break up of Black Oak, Jim worked in Champaign, Illinois, and then Los Angeles until returning to Jackson in 2000. In the late 1990s, Jimi's interests shifted to music composition and keyboards, further expanding his remarkable musical talent. In Jackson he became lead guitarist and music director for blues legend Dorothy Moore. During his career, he appeared on over twenty records and albums as guitarist, composer, and arranger.

Jim loved his family devotedly and took care of his parents for the last several years, while continuing to perform and work. He is preceded in death by his father, the Reverend T. W. Henderson, and survived by his mother, Beatrice Henderson, Pearl; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Tommye Henderson, Clinton; sister and brother-in-law, Cecelia and Ray Burgess, Pearl; nephew Josh Little, Pearl; nieces Corley Henderson, Clinton, Hollye Henderson, Jackson, and Finn Little, Pearl.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or another charity of choice.

I want to correct something, Jimmy was playing with Mississippi Rain at The Beach House in Biloxi not The Webs, he was 17 at that time. He was such a wonderful young person. He made an impression on my heart!

April 19, 2024

I just found out that Jimmy has departed this earth as I´ve thought of him many times over the years. I met him when The Webs were playing at The Beach House in Biloxi! I felt like he was a younger brother immediately! I was also very young as this was in 1971. I was privileged to spend a little time with him and he was there when my son took his first footsteps. Like I said, I thought friendship, like a brother. So for his family I want to say that I´m sorry for your loss, I knew him 52 years ago, I lost track but was happy for him when knowing he was with Black Oak Arkansas. He was a great guitar player and people just sat still listening to his genius skills. I have never forgot this sweet, kind, gentle soul who was my buddy, my friend who even helped me build a stereo cabinet out of cylinder blocks and boards. He was such a special person and I felt blessed to have known him even though that was 52 years ago. Sandy

Jimmy was my roommate when we worked together in George Faber and Stronghold in Champaign Illinois. I just found out he had passed away at such a young age. In fact he was just a few months older than me. We had many great times playing and traveling together and he was one of the funniest people I have ever known. My condolences to his family and as a few others have said here RIP Soybean.

I met jimmy in 1972 when he and tommy aldridge were in the Webs, and played at CoLin , where i was going to school and learning about things i never knew existed...we made a couple blocks in the country , as we all tended to do back then, and they came back and played in a wooden gym...needless to say , the echoes were extra loud for all of us that night...30 years or so later, i met jimmy again, he came out to our weekly jam at the warehouse..who would have believed this quiet, sweet guy could extract such a sound from a guitar. He was phenomenal....in 1998 i moved to pearl and at least once a month , i would run into him and his sweet mother in the kroger, and he would reintroduce me as his guitar playing friend...he was one of a kind, a sweet soul, who created magic on guitar...now i run into josh every now and then in the gateway store in pearl and it makes me smile, because i always think of jimmy and miss bea...

I had the privilege of sharing several years of Jimi's live with him while I was in Black Oak. He came in barely out of his teens with such energy and talent. About 2 yrs ago we were brought back together to record on another project for Atlantic records. He was still the bright, positive, energetic soul who loved his music and I am thankful to have shared my time on this earth with Jimi.

To Jimi's family, my heartfelt condolences. I wish I could have known Jimi. Playing drums & singing in bands was all I wanted to do for so many years. A tour in the U.S. Marine Corps put that on hold & a call to ministry totally redirected my life. How I missed getting together with people like Tommy Aldridge & Jimi & others, only the LORD knows. I am looking forward to having Eternity to have a chance to visit with Jimi. May the LORD JESUS CHRIST continue to comfort Jimi's family and friends.

I am deeply saddened by Jimmy's passing. I did merchandise and the BOA.com website from 1998-2000. Jimmy graciously contributed photos and information for a "Where are they now" section of the website. We spoke many times on the phone and he was always very nice and encouraged me to keep playing guitar. I will never forget him and his incomparable playing on so many albums. My heart goes out to his family in this difficult time. God Bless you Jimmy
