Jackson - Janet Mitchell Head passed on to eternal life May 5, 2018 at the age of 84. She lived life to the fullest, always seeing the glass half full. Her radiant smile and caring heart touched the lives of so many in a positive way. Janet or "Jan" as she was known by family and friends was born March 9, 1934 to Christine Tinsley Mitchell and William Thomas Mitchell of Birmingham, AL. She graduated from Shades Valley High School and The University of Alabama where she was a member of Phi-Mu sorority. While working at the UAB Medical School, she met and married the love of her life, Charles Moreland Head, MD (Charlie). Jan and Charlie lived in Columbus, GA, Shreveport, LA and then settled in Jackson, MS where they raised their three children. She was an active member of Galloway United Methodist Church, the Jackson community and served as President of the Central Medical Auxiliary. Jan and Charlie retired in New Bern, NC and enjoyed traveling to see their children and grandchildren as well as close friends. Jan is survived by her three children, William "Billy" Loderick Head (Miyong) of Dallas, TX, Leslie Head Matheson (Jack) of Birmingham, AL, and Kristi Sutton Toler (Ken) of Ridgeland, MS; grandchildren Brittany Thames Roberts (Patrick) of McKinney TX, Janet Christine Matheson, Mary Ann Matheson and John Daniel Matheson, all from Birmingham, AL, Sarah Frances Matheson of Nashville, TN, Lauren Grace Sutton of New Orleans, LA and James Christopher Sutton of Los Angeles, CA; great grandchildren Sophia Teagan Roberts and Oliver Patrick Roberts both from McKinney, TX; her sister-in-law Rita Wallenius Mitchell of Metairie, LA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Thomas Mitchell, MD, and her beloved husband Charlie. A Service of Remembrance for Jan is planned for 2pm, Friday, May 25 at Galloway United Methodist Church in Jackson. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service at 1pm. Internment will be private with family on Saturday, May 26 at Canterbury Methodist Church in Birmingham, AL. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to UMMC's Mind Center in Jackson, MS.
