Richard Wessman Obituary

Richard Livingston (Dick) Wessman, 72, died Friday, November 5, 2010, at St. Dominic Hospital after a brief acute illness and in the presence of family and close friends.
The funeral service and Eucharist will be at 10 am Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at St. James' Episcopal Church, 3921 Oakridge Drive, Jackson. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday at the church's Oak Ridge Hall.
Wessman was born April 6, 1938, to Swedish Immigrant Carl Oké and Ohioan Edith Wedow Wessman in Cleveland. He was graduated from University High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and attended The University of Arizona, lettering in track and earning bachelor's and master's degrees in city and urban planning with a minor in foreign trade.
Dedicated to public service, starting in college as a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, Wessman worked as a city planner in both Tucson, AZ, and Jackson, and retired in 2001 as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service.
Wessman's zest for life focused on sports, arts and crafts, reading, and travel. His passion for sports cars lead him to become first pro rally director of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA); he also was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of the Mississippi Region, SCCA. Always a supporter of craftsmen and artists, he patronized their organizations and volunteered his time to support their talents. A resident of Fondren and a communicant of St. James' Episcopal Church, he volunteered at University of Mississippi Medical Center ICU and the Mississippi Crafts Center.
Survivors are his wife of 15 years, NancyKay Sullivan Wessman; two sons, Auburn James of Baton Rouge, LA, and Christopher Carl of Los Angeles, CA, with previous wife of 25 years, Kathleen Lightfoot (Mrs. Dorwin) Sheathelm of Dansville, MI; and one sister, Margaret Wessman (Mrs. Gerald) Vauk of Barrington, IL.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to St. James' Episcopal Church Music Ministry (www.stjjax.org), Stewpot Community Services (www.stewpot.org), Heifer International, Mississippi Crafts Center, or a charity of choice.
