Samuel Lloyd Obituary

Lt. Col. Samuel Lloyd Jr.

Madison

Samuel "Thames" Lloyd, born February 21, 1918, died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at St. Catherine's Village, Madison, MS, where he was a resident. Thames was a native of Jackson and a graduate of Central High School. He graduated from Millsaps College and the University of Mississippi School of Law. He served in World War II as a navigator/bombardier in the U.S. Air Force. At the end of World War II he left the U.S. Air force and was actively engaged in the Oil & Gas Industry for several years. He was recalled to active duty in 1952 during the Korean War where he remained in the Air Force as a member of the JAG until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel. He returned to the Oil & Gas Industry. Thames was one of four children born to the late Clyde Blackmon Lloyd and Samuel Thames Lloyd. He is preceded in death by siblings Betty Clyde Lloyd, William Baldwin Lloyd and Connie Lloyd Herlong. In 1948 he married Marie Ann "Tootsie" Spivey of Canton, MS. They were active members and communicants of Grace Episcopal Church. They were the parents of six children, Aletha, Sam, Lewie, Lucy, Ruth and Susan who are grateful for their father's devotion to his wife and family, his generosity and the invaluable gifts he gave them all: a love of reading and an appreciation of the value of education. He was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Episcopal Church in Canton with graveside services following in Canton Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m.in the parish hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to Grace Episcopal Church, 161 East Peace Street, Canton, MS 39046.

Mr. Lloyd's ancestor fought in the Civil War with my great grandfather. I would like to contact family members who might be interested in the geneology of the Thames family. Thank You!
