Spiro Cora Obituary

Spiro Pete Cora

Jackson

On 1 September 2011, Spiro Pete Cora, age 76, died peacefully at home from cancer. Spiro was born 7 January 1935 at 5 o'clock in the morning to Ourania (Nina) Pappaspiridon Cora and Panagiotis (Pete) Cora both originally of Skopelos, Greece, in Greenville, Mississippi. Spiro attended Greenville Public Schools through the 8th grade. In 1949 the family moved to Lexington MS and he graduated from Lexington High School in 1953. He gained first hand caf? experience helping his father at the Coney Island Caf? in Greenville and at the Welcome Inn Caf? in Lexington.

Spiro attended Millsaps College for 2 years, then worked with Peter J. Costas at the Shamrock Drive Inn in Jackson where he eventually became manager and a working partner in the business. There he met his future wife, Virginia Lee Brothers Cora, whom he married in 1961. He entered Mississippi College in Clinton and graduated in 1963 with a BA degree in history and secondary education. The Cora's moved to Collier County, Florida, where he taught social studies at Immokalee and lived in Naples until 1966 when they moved back to Jackson. Spiro taught US History at Enochs Junior High School until 1969 when he received his MA degree in US History from MC. He then taught social studies at Wingfield High School for 27 years, received a Specialist designation in History with 45 hours of Post-Master's degree work from USM, and became a leader in the Social Studies Department of Jackson Public Schools. He worked with pupils, fellow teachers, and administrators and lead extra curricular school activities (e.g., class sponsor, Follies, Close Up DC, et al) until his retirement in 1996. He was an active member and officer in the Mississippi Council for the Social Studies.

Spiro and Virginia Lee had three children with eleven grandchildren, Michael S. (Carrie Causbie) Cora of Kissimmee, Florida, with Nicholas, Andrew, and Anna; Catherine Ann (Jennifer Johnson) Cora of Santa Barbara, California, with Zoran, Caje, Thatcher, and Nash; and Christopher S. (Jennifer Harrell) Cora of Byram, Mississippi, with Morgan, Alexandria (Lexi), Paxton, and Hallie. Spiro was an active member of the Holy Trinity and St John Theologian Greek Orthodox Church and the AHEPA, and enjoyed boating, camping, eagle watching, and team sports. He was loved and admired by all who knew him for his kind and caring nature, especially by his adoring family, many friends, neighbors on Swan Lake, and the students and faculty at Wingfield.

Funeral services begin with visiting hours 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a Trisagion at 7:00 pm on Friday, 2 September, at Wright & Ferguson Downtown on High Street, the funeral at 10:00 am, preceded by visitation at 9:00 am on Saturday, 3 September, at the Holy Trinity St John Greek Orthodox Church at 5725 Pear Orchard Road, and burial at Cedar Lawn Cemetery on West Capitol Street, officiated by Father Andrew Koufopoulos and assisted by Father Paul Yerger of Holy Resurrection in Clinton. I am one of the many blessed souls who had the privilege of having Mr. Cora as a history teacher at Wingfield. I always loved history, so being in his class made it all the better. My prayers are with the family. God bless you.

Mr. Cora was a teacher of mine in '96 or so and I remember him fondly. Years later I called the Cora house after reading in the Clarion Ledger that Spiro had been in the restaurant business, hoping that he was still in it, but was retired. Maybe we can sample his cuisine past the pearlies. God bless.

My favorite history teacher, but more importantly, my favorite "life teacher." He taught me to take a stand for what I believe, and to KNOW what I believe. He taught me conviction, and confidence in those convictions. I have taught my kids what he taught me. He was a great man, and I will miss him. Wingfield was better because of him, and so am I.

I had Mr. Cora for history at Wingfield High School in 1977. He was my favorite teacher making my dislike of the subject of History more fun. I actually loved that class because of him. He was fun spirited and a friend to all of his students. He will be missed greatly!!! He was one of our class sponsors therefore made our 10th Reunion a smash hit with his homemade Baklava!! Must say it was delicious and will never forget it. Prayers and condolences for the family for their loss of such a beloved man. Heaven got a #1 angel this week. The news of Spiro Cora's passing has left me with so many emotions. It is a sad day, but he was a man with such joy for life, that I am sure he would want us to rejoice in the wonderful memories we share. Mr Cora was my teacher at Wingfield, and we all loved him so much. He sponsored our class of '76, and I look back on those days as some of the happiest in my life and he was a part of that. As I teach my own Social Studies class now, I can only hope to impart some of the wisdom and kindness that this teacher gave to me. Thank you, Mr. Cora, and love to your family who misses you so.

I had Mr Cora as my history teacher many years ago at Enochs Jr High School. He was such an amazing teacher that I can still remember him assigning me to write a paper called the Diplomacy of the Confederacy. To remember the name of a paper after all these years he truly made an impression on me. May his family find comfort and peace in their time of grief.

I was in one of his classes (I graduated in '79), but I thought of him more as a friend and not really as a teacher - in the traditional sense - at all, though I learned a great deal from him. He was always up for a spirited debate, and was one to bend the rules a little for those of his less conventional charges that he chaperoned on school trips (shh, don't tell anyone!).

He brought out the best in others. A wise and tolerant man, he knew how to laugh and love. I will never forget him. I join in his family's sorrow for his passing, but I rejoice in his life. He was a man who knew how to live, and he was much loved.

There will never be another Spiro! What an incredible person! Truly a man who lived life to the fullest and shared his enthusiasm with everyone who met him! I knew Mr.Cora thru my parents before I had the pleasure of having him as a teacher at Wingfield (WHS class of'88). It is incredible to think of all of the lives he has positively impacted! My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Cora family. I know there is a void. So many people will be lifting all of you up in prayer. Heaven has gained a strong, smiling, bright light. Mr. Cora you will be greatly missed by many! God bless you and your family!

To all the Cora family, Spiro will be remembered as one of the nicest and finest men I have ever known. One Friday while eating lunch at Bill's Greek Tavern, I realized that some of the people at the next table were Spiro's relatives, but some of the others didn't know him.
I joined the conversation, and was able to tell them the sentiments I have just mentioned. We were at Millsaps in 1955 when I was a freshman, and our pictures were on the same page of the Bobashela. But, I remember him best from the Greekfest at his church on West Capitol Street. He made you feel like you were glad you had come. Our deepest condolences to all of you.

its a sad day for us falcons. another 1 of our great teachers has went home. he was not only a teacher but he was also a good man. he not only made us read the words in the book. but he also made us understand what we were reading. and that is very rare. he influenced alot of us falcons over the years. but he would not want us to grieve. because if we work as hard as he has shown us to do we will see him again 1 day. thank you mr cora for being a true teacher to me. and i say thank you for all of us falcons. if we are half the person that you were then we are going to be ok. i truly feel for Mr. cora's family. because the grieving process has just began.. and truthfully it will take a lifetime to heal. you are in my thoughts and prayers. i truly know what it feels like to lose family
