Stanley McKinnon Obituary

Stanley Dayton McKinnon, 89, died of pneumonia on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland. Visitation will be held at Wright & Ferguson, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, from 5:00 – 7:00pm on Sunday, April 20th. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, April 21, 2008, at Lakewood Memorial Park, 6000 Clinton Blvd., Jackson. Officiating will be the Reverend David McIntosh of Christ United Methodist Church.
Mr. McKinnon was born January 9, 1919, in Armour, South Dakota. He moved to Jackson in 1933 with his family, and graduated from Central High School. He initially ran several automobile businesses while working his way through school. He earned a law degree and was admitted to the Mississippi Bar in 1940.
In 1942, Mr. McKinnon married the former Charlotte Truitt, a high school classmate. After honeymooning in Mexico, they moved to New Orleans, where Mr. McKinnon served in the intelligence branch of the Coast Guard for the remainder of World War II. Following the war, the McKinnons returned to Jackson, where he founded an insurance firm. Following retirement, he and his wife traveled extensively in Europe and Asia in connection with her antiques business.
As a counterpart to his business interests, Mr. McKinnon was active in church, civic, and cultural affairs. He was a charter member of the Jackson Civitan Club, serving as President and District Governor. He was also a leader in the March of Dimes. Mr. McKinnon was a longtime member of the Country Club of Jackson and the Mississippi Seniors Golf Association. He was a lifelong avid golfer whose personal highlight was a hole-in-one witnessed by his son and grandson. Other social memberships included Calliope and "21" dinner clubs. In later years, Mr. McKinnon and his wife became enthusiastic fans of the Atlanta Braves, regularly watching televised games together and reading the team magazine ChopTalk.
Throughout his long life, Mr. McKinnon was unfailingly kind and a thoughtful friend to many. He is fondly remembered for his caring nature in frequently checking in with friends, relatives, and neighbors, concerned for their well-being. During his recent illness, numerous of these "Stan Fans," as his son called them, constantly checked on him. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tell—and hear—a good story. Successful in school, business, and civic life, Mr. McKinnon considered his family his crowning achievement. And he was beloved by them.
Survivors are his wife of 66 years, Charlotte Truitt McKinnon; his daughters and their spouses, Melinda and John Kenney of McLean, Virginia, and Kathy and Don Henry of Newport News, Virginia; his son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Carol McKinnon of Jackson; his granddaughter and her husband, Susan and Chris Battle of Washington, DC; his granddaughter Charlotte Hudson of Dallas, Texas; and his grandsons, David and Mark McKinnon of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Peggy McKinnon of Covington, Louisiana; a niece, Nadine Leverette of Jackson, and numerous other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four older siblings.
His family is sincerely grateful for the care of his physicians, Dr. George Patton and Dr. Salil Tiwari. They also appreciate the compassion of the nursing staff at St. Dominic Hospital and Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Country Club of Jackson Junior Golf Program, attention Ralph Sebrell, 345 St. Andrews Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.
