Thomas Davis. Obituary

Thomas Moore Davis,Sr., M.D., 83, of Madison, Mississippi and long time family physician of Jackson, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. Dr. Davis was born on June 4, 1926, in Bogalusa, Louisiana, to Barnett L. and Ruby Huntley Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Quida Jarrell Davis; five children, Michelle Lane Myrick and husband, Chris of Starkville, MS, Stephanie Lane Parkman and husband, Jason of Madison, MS, Thomas M Davis, Jr., M.D. and wife, Amy of Tuscaloosa, AL, Ruby Davis Lauderdale of Brandon, MS, and Peggy Davis Ely and husband, Mike of Brentwood, TN; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Barnett L. Davis, Jr.
Services will be Friday, February 12, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philips Episcopal Church, 5400 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS, where he was an active member. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Natchez Trace Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
Dr. Davis was educated in the Jackson Public School System graduating from Central High School in 1943. He then attended Virginia Military Institute and Tulane University Medical School, graduating in 1951. He served as a corpsman in the United States Navy during World War II from 1944 until 1946. He did a rotating internship at Mississippi Baptist Hospital, Jackson, Mississippi, and a General Practice residency at E. A. Conway Hospital, Monroe, LA 1952 to 1953. He was in private practice in Jackson, Mississippi, from 1953 until 2005 and was an Aviation Medical Examiner from 1964 until his death. Dr. Davis was one of four area family physicians instrumental in the development of the Department of Family Medicine at University of Mississippi Medical Center and remained with the Department either in a full or part-time basis until his retirement in 2005. He was an avid teacher that was well respected by his residents and colleagues. He received the Outstanding Teaching Physician Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1998.
He was affiliated with Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, St. Dominic Hospital, River Oaks Hospital, and University of Mississippi Medical Center. He served in many areas including Chief of Staff at Baptist Hospital. He was Hinds County Coroner for a period of 12 years and was active in area politics.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials are made to Hospice Ministries, 450 Town Center Drive, Ridgeland, MS; St. Philips Episcopal Church, Jackson, MS; or Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children.

I am saddened to hear, at this late date, about Dr. Tommy's passing. He will be remembered by the aviation community as a gentile caring physician dedicated to his profession and keeping us flying.
Ouida, please know that he will be sadly missed. We have truly lost a true and wonderful friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and all in his family. He was a special man.
Tommy, may your journey west be safe with tailwinds and blue sky.

Ouida, I am so sorry and saddened about Tommy...it hurts me that I could not be in Jackson during this time. Daddy is so torn up over loosing his best friend...what memories we all have of one of the funniest man to walk this planet. Dr. Davis poked and sewed me back together many times over the years......and I'm not sure I said thanks. Mom enjoyed working for the good doctor.........and she always talked about him in a good way....believe me.

I wanted to take this time to send our condolences to you and your family. My mother, Vivian Moses, was Dr. Davis' nurse for a few years. Also, Dr. Davis delivered all four of us! According to my mom, he was such a wonderful man! Please know that you are in our prayers.
