William Stringer Obituary

William "Bill" Stringer of Barlow, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, after fighting a good fight against lung cancer that had metasticized to his lumbar vertabra.
Memorial and graveside services will be held on Friday, July 2, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Rehobeth Church and Cemetery in Barlow with Rev. Michael Assink officiating.
Mr. Stringer was born on July 11, 1927. He grew up in Hinds and Copiah Counties and graduated from Hinds Junior College.  He worked for Nabisco Brands for over 40 years. As he advanced in the company, he and his wife, Lorraine Barlow Stringer, and eventually their 2 children, Trudy and Alan, moved from Jackson to Meridian, to Birmingham, to Elmira, NY, to Buffalo, NY, back to Birmingham, to Jacksonville, FL, and finally to Atlanta, GA where he retired as Regional VP of Operations. 20 years ago, he and Lorraine moved back to Lorraine's family land in Barlow, MS where he built a log house.  Fond of woodworking and tinkering all his life, he quickly became well-known in Copiah County for his handcrafted furniture, sturdy deer stands, and milled lumber. Frequent visitors watched Mr. Bill call the deer up in the front yard and feed them each evening. He was a dedicated Lay Leader in Rehobeth Methodist Church and co-founder and first Fire Chief of the Barlow Volunteer Fire Dept, a position that he proudly held until recently. He cast a wide net among people and gave unconditionally of himself to his friends, family and those in need of his help. His gentle nature, ability to listen, and quiet wisdom will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched, but especially by his family and extended family in the community.
It has been said that the true mark of a man upon his death is not how well he was loved by others, but how well he loved. Bill Stringer was blessed on both counts.
Mr. Stringer was preceded in death by his parents, Price Monroe Stringer and Gertrude Roberts Stringer; by his son, William Alan Stringer; and by his sisters, Nellavie ("Pug") Stringer, Abbie Louise Stringer, and Katie Stringer Boyd.
Blood relative survivors include his wife of 60 years, Lorraine Barlow Stringer of Barlow, currently residing in Community Place in Jackson; his daughter, Trudy Stringer Reeves, currently residing in Barlow; his sister, Laverne Stringer Guion of Jackson; his grandson, Charles William Reeves, Jr., currently residing in Japan; his nephew, David Milton Guion of Jackson; his niece, Ellen Guion Etter of Atlanta, GA; his nephew, Robert ("Bobby") Boyd of Raymond; his niece, Ann Boyd Ezell of Bridge City, TX; plus so many more actual relatives or not who called him "Uncle Bill".
