Christopher Eddy Obituary

Christopher Eddy

Fort Collins - Chris passed away peacefully at home on April 23, 2020. He very much enjoyed life and living, but colon cancer determined he would get only 49 years, plus one month and fifteen days. He had every intent of accomplishing many more goals with his family and friends.

To meet Chris was to instantly like him. He was a genuinely good person. He grew up in Arvada where he was the victor of many rubber band wars throughout elementary school, although rarely beat his cousins at Monopoly (just ask they'll tell you). At an early age it was clear that he was an individual who would set high goals and achieve them. It was while in junior high that he decided he would become an optometrist, partially motivated by the family's optometrist, Dr. Fukai.

He moved to Fort Collins to attend CSU (Go Rams!). He met his love, Steph, and they both graduated in 1993. They married in 1994 while Chris attended Southern California College of Optometry. Then after he graduated with distinction in 1997, they returned to Fort Collins. He was a dedicated Ram fan through and through.

Chris joined Eyecare Associates in 1998. He was a great eye doctor and partner. He won Colorado's Young Optometrist of the Year, Optometrist of the Year, and was given a national award for his work with an infant eye care program. He took immense pride in his profession, serving terms as president of the Northern Colorado Optometric Society and president of the Colorado Optometric Association. He enjoyed seeing patients from infants through adults, finding ways to incorporate a magic trick during many visits.

Chris was passionate about martial arts. He had received black belts in Tae Kwon Do, and Jujitsu and had been working toward a black belt in Karate with his friends at Total Ryu Martial Arts. He enjoyed planning ahead - the fun stuff (like camping) and the practical stuff (like buying a camper, fixing the camper, winterizing the camper, storing the camper, fixing the camper again, and selling the camper).

Chris was always cheerful and optimistic. He was funny and enjoyed a good laugh, even at his own expense. He was a modest and humble human being, who led by example. While not a religious man, he treated every individual as he would want to be treated. There was not a person whom he could not sit down with and befriend with a respect toward their values.

Chris was most proud of his two girls. He shared his enthusiasm for just about everything with them. He was a phenomenal dad, prioritizing dance competitions and soccer games over CSU Rams tailgates. He loved being part of their lives. He was so content just hanging around the house together with his family. He set an example as a father for all of us to follow.

Chris is survived by his wife Stephanie, daughters Jillian and Jordyn, as well as his mom Sandy and brother Greg (Joan). His father Lowell preceded him in death. In lieu of flowers, Chris requested donations to a scholarship fund to be formed for pre-optometry undergraduates at CSU. Please make checks payable to "CSU Foundation", in the memo line include "Chris Eddy Memorial Scholarship". These can be mailed to P.O. Box 273098, Fort Collins, CO, 80527. A gathering to share memories will be scheduled at a later date.

One day my Mom, a somewhat volatile and confused person, had a sharp pain in her eye, and we ended up seeing Chris because her doc was out for the day. He was so intelligent, gracious, kind, and reassuring (dealing with a notoriously difficult patient) that I decided on the spot to see him as my own eye doctor.

I never met him out of the office but it was always such a pleasure to see him. He made difficult things so easy. Much appreciated.

Sincerest condolences,

Ian

Dr. Eddy was a one of a kind person and doctor. He showed he cared about our eyes, our health, and who we were as people. I can't believe he remembered everything! I could walk into an appointment and we would pick our conversation like old friends catching up on each other's lives. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. My family and I will miss him greatly, I started seeing him when I was a student at CSU back around 2002 and he has since been the eye doctor, for me, my husband, our children, my mom, and a multitude of friends because I couldn't help but tell everyone about how great he was. I have worked with many doctors, but not many have the ability to be brilliant physicians and be personable with their patients. He set the standard for other providers for me. Thanks-you to his family for allowing us the pleasure of being a part of his professional life. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. He was telling me that you all were going to take a trip to Canada after your daughter's graduation, I sure hope you all were able to go and filled your hearts and minds with a wealth of memories.
God Bless,

I feel so fortunate, for over 20 years, my daughter and I had such excellent eye care from Dr. Eddy. He was genuinely caring and interested in not only how our eyes were, but our whole health, and us as people. A good spirited man, his upbeat, fun attitude during your appointment always made you feel good. His diagnosis of my glaucoma, meant multiple appointments each year, so I got to know and appreciate him a little bit more. He treated me as a caring friend, and I cherish his kindness. I appreciated his referrals to specialists and his constant concern about my health. I will never forget one year when his girls were still very young, I was canvasing for money for the Food Bank in a cardboard soup can at the CSU Homecoming parade, and sitting there with his family, he recognized me and calling me by name said "Hi". I was so impressed, that with all of his patients, he would know who I was. Dr. Eddy also became my granddaughters eye doctor, seeing 3 generations of my family. My daughter, was so very impressed how good he was with the girls starting with their 9 month old visit, now 4 & 8 years. He was a real people-person, a natural with all age groups. It seems like yesterday when he told me about his cancer, then at 47, we both said he was way too young, and he was so worried for his family. My sincere condolences for your whole family. We will all miss him so very much!

I was an incoming Freshman at CSU and was desperate to find a good optometrist in Fort Collins. I was lucky enough to find Dr Eddy who turned out to be the best optometrist I have ever had. I looked forward to every appointment because I always walked out of there feeling and seeing better than ever. Not only did he help me with my terrible vision but his kind words brought comfort to me. I was 18 years old and had just moved to a completely new city and Dr Eddy made me feel welcome. At our second appointment I remember being taken aback because he remembered my major, my hometown, my career aspirations- everything. It showed how much he cared about his patients beyond our eye care. I am going into my Senior year and will always remember my favorite doctor who helped me throughout my college experience. My condolences to his family and loved ones, he will be missed by many.

I was extremely fortunate to be referred to Dr. Eddy in 2005 after a severe head injury. I have been his patient since. He has been more than just my eye doctor, hes been my friend, dried many tears through my frustrations, encouraged me to not give up, celebrated my successes, given me advice when he didnt have to and taught me the true meaning of courage. All of us who have had the privilege to have Chris Eddy in our lives have truly been blessed and our lives are better because of him.

Dr. Eddy was my eye doctor for over 20 years and I looked forward to my appointment with him every year. We always had a nice chat before each exam and we frequently chuckled about the joys and trials of raising children. He was always so very patient with me as we tried different solutions for my eye care needs. He also treated my daughter and her husband and their three children. We always had so much confidence in him and we will all miss having him in our lives. I send heartfelt condolences to Steph and the girls, knowing the journey you must have had throughout his illness as my husband also succumbed to colon cancer back in 2003.

I am deeply sadden to hear the passing of Dr. Eddy
I met Dr. Eddy and his wife and two daughters at CSU Early Childhood Center. He was a dedicated dad always involved in his girls preschool activities. He was a wonderful mentor for future UNC optometry students, and shared that with a yearly exam for the children in the early childhood center. He was so caring, giving of his time, and patient with each and every child.
My family and I were also patients of Dr. Eddy, and received such excellent care for our eyes. Sending hugs to his wife, and Jillian and Jordan. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

We are truly stunned and saddened to hear of Dr. Eddy's passing. Our experience of him is exactly reflected in the memories shared by others. What a kind, competent, gentle soul he was. We took his presence for granted, just assuming his availability would certainly outlive our need for eye care. We cannot imagine the devastation his family, partners and staff must be experiencing. Our sincere condolences to all of you.

We moved here in 1998 and Dr. Eddy became our eye doc. My naval experience was never to see the same doctor more than once. It was refreshing to look forward to visits with him as he got to know me from the start and remember me as a submariner, asking questions on submarine related topics. He was a great doctor helping my wife with her vision problems associated with hashimoto's. He was a genuine likeable person and it was a comfort being seen by him. Best wishes for his friends, associates, and especially his family.

Chris was one of a kind. I met him when he first started at ECA. Greatest optometrist ever and a great person. From knowing what to do with my contacts to helping my mom with her cataract surgery to taking on my partners eyes to laughing with me about what was happening with our lives as we sat in his office discussing eye care.... I'll miss him greatly. Love to his family...

I enjoyed reading Dr. Eddys memorial because it captured him so well. I always felt our lives were parallel in many ways: same age, CSU alums (along with our spouses), two children same ages, and similar outlooks. I always looked forward to catching up with him at my annual appointments. He was kind, funny, and caring. I will be praying for peace and comfort for his wife, daughters, and loved ones.

We knew Dr Eddy as patients and am so thankful for his kind and compassionate treatment of our family. He was thorough and always had time to talk through our concerns. I'm glad we got to tell him how much we appreciated him in January at our final visit with him. He took my concerns seriously about my son's vision issues and got us in touch with the appropriate resources. He will always and forever have our gratitude. Our condolences to his with and girls.

We miss him a lot at Eyecare Associates...I really looked up to Dr. Eddy and respected him and will never forget everything he taught me. He made me a huge part of the ECA family over these past 16 years. I will miss passing him in the office saying "Was up C-dub"...I will miss us joking about cracking a cold bud light after work... I will miss talking about the Ram's football and saying "Go Ram's" randomly in the office...I will miss talking about our kids and all their accomplishments. Everyone who knew him is suffering a great loss right now. My condolences to his wife and girls.

Dr. Eddy will be truly missed. I always enjoyed those pre-eye exam chats to catch up on life, kids, sports (usually running) and life in general. My family and I were all patients of Dr. Eddy's (for many years), but I always considered him a friend. May he rest in peace and memories of Dr. Eddy last forever.
