Irene Chesnut
February 5, 1938 - July 31, 2024
Irene (Bristol) Chesnut, formerly of Columbus Nebraska, passed away on July 31, 2024, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. At her wishes, there will be no memorial services, and her remains were donated to the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine to benefit further scientific knowledge.
Irene was the youngest child of Lester and Barbara Bristol of Greeley Nebraska and was preceded in death by her beloved husband Willis (Willie) Chesnut, her parents, two brothers, and her son in law, John Keefe. After starting college at Kearney State College as a young adult, Irene left school to get married and raise her four children. She went back to college in her 50's, graduating with an associate's degree from Platte Community College. Irene was a lifelong gardener, an avid quilter and shared a love of the outdoors and conservation with her husband. Together they volunteered with the Raptor Recovery Center in Lincoln Nebraska in the role of transporting injured birds to the center for care and recovery.
Irene is survived by her four children; Jane Chesnut of Lincoln, NE; JoAnn Keefe of Tumwater, WA; Patrick (Jill) Chesnut of Fredericksburg, VA and Peggy Chesnut-Via (Michael Via) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL as well as five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

My sympathy to all Irene's family. It was my JOY to work with her at Hinky-Dinky in downtown Columbus in the 70's! She was the meat-wrapper and I worked at the checkouts, office, and produce. It seemed she was always having a great day! Thank you for putting this in the Columbus paper.
