Captain Danny Nelms has gone on to glory and what a true saint God has on the rolls for the call of duty.
As many I just today google him only to discover his passing 7 years ago.
I had the pleasure of serving with Captain Nelms in New Orleans, Louisiana back in 1997.
He and I served as President and Vice President of the African American Committee. Captain Nelms´ leadership led our people to achieve success in many capacities - but most importantly, self value.
In his spare time he enjoyed officiating basketball games every place he was stationed. I truly got to know the man personally at gatherings involving playing cards. Boy was he so confident and back up his trash talk by Winning.
I´m sad to have not stayed in contact with him after retirement from the U.S. Navy.
I will always pay homage to God for allowing me to get to know such an amazing man.

I saw a post today, it told of your passing. I was ssdden to hear. My deepest condolences to your family. I never had the honor of serving with you but I will remember your kindness forever. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, sense of humor, and your love of black history. You absolutely played a role in shaping my Naval career..... The first Black Captain. I ever met. You threw more ropes and paved the way for many of us...Rest in Peace Captain Nelms.

I knew LTJG Danny Nelms when he was my division office back in San Diego in the mid 70s I just recently found some of my old Navy paperwork and found his name so I thought I would try to locate him to say hello. He was the C.I.C. officer on the U.S.S Anchorage LSD 36 and I was one of the senior Operations Specialist onboard. I can still remember his smile and personality. He was still a young office then and I was responsible for teaching him how we operated. We talked a lot in those days and he was a very understanding junior office. I remember visiting his home one time when I sold him what was then an advanced 4 track reel to reel audio tape deck. I am really saddened to think he is gone and I really was hoping to reminisce with him about our days together.

Danny, you will be loved forever. ..
Last night I had the weirdest dream. I dreamt Danny visited me in the city he hated. The dream was strange, sweet, gentle and caring. I could not understand the reason I had the dream as it was the first time I dreamed of Danny. Later, as I recalled the dream something told me to search his name and obituary. I am truly hurt and wished I knew sooner. I will forever cherish my memories of my dear loving friend.

I realize this is late & I don't know what made me Google Danny Nelms today, June 25, 2017 but I'm now shocked & deeply sadden to find "Dano" had passed away. I met Dano in the 80's & we've kept in contact since. One of my greatest experiences in life was dining with Captain Nelms & his crew aboard the "38 Special." I now know why my 2016 Christmas card was returned. Rest in peace my friend. To Megan, my deepest condolences, your father was one of the few good men.

I am so sorry to hear about Danny's passing, five months too late. I wish I had known. Danny was a good friend and mentor since the summer of 1984. As a midshipman on the Tarawa, Danny took me under his wing and helped to ensure that I was prepared for the Navy upon my commission. This news has come as a tremendous blow to me. I will miss Danny very much.
Danny, I pray that you will watch over me, and let me know when I am going astray.

I was priveleged to work under the leadership of Danny Nelms , while employed as Supervisor of Properties, through UNICCO Services Company.A firm,yet fair and compassionate individual, of highest professional standards and equally impressive in decorum...especially in fashion. What an honor to be connected with him and draw from the wisdom both he and his forerunner, James Tarver,freely shared, helping the staff excel. I was privileged to meet and get to know Danny C. Nelms over the past decade. Dan was a compassionate, driven, no nonsense, and private individual. He provided wise counsel to me on numerous matters of great consequence. I am forever indebted to him. My heartfelt condolences are extended to Megan and all of Dan's relatives and dear friends. Dan and I have been friends for many years. We met in Memphis and developed a friendship and respect that has lasted throughout the years. It was an honor to spend time with him, "Mustang Megan" and others in his family or mine. My husband Renall and I wil miss him, his music and his wit. Fair winds my dear friend.

Danny and I attended Prairie View A&M university together and he was the Master of Ceremony during my Retirement from the Navy. We continued to work together in Memphis until 2001. He was a private and serious individual but you could always count on him to have your back. A true professional and friend.

I was stationed with Capt. Nelms in New Orleans from 1996 until he retired. He was one of the smartest, wisest men I knew! I will definitely miss talking to him and learning from him. God bless his family and his soul.

It was an honor and privilege to serve under Captain Nelms. He was one of the best COs I ever served under. He was fair and cool under pressure. The ship's missions were no picnic but he appreciated the hard work so it drove us to go the extra mile. Wish I had an opportunity to tell him in person how much he impacted my life. I served with CAPT NELMS as his Chief Engineer onboard USS PENSACOLA LSD-38 during the first GULF WAR. I loved and respected him dearly as our Commanding Officer and as a great friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will surely be missed.
