Johnny Horton Obituary

JOHNNY CLEO "Bill" HORTON, 66, retired Teamster and Consolidated freight employee, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Methodist University Hospital. He was born on March 20, 1942 in Parkin, AR to the late Percy L. Horton and Johnnie Cleo Bell. Johnny was preceded in death by both his parents and two sisters, Mattie L. Breakfield and Percy Lee Horton Thomas. Johnny attended Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, TN, having graduated in the Class of 1960. He confessed Christ at an early age and united with Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, under the pastorate of Reverend L. H. Aldrige. He later joined Salem-Gilfield Missionary Baptist, where he served as an usher, a deacon, and a member of the male chorus. Johnny was a member of the Polly Williams Walking Group, and he looked forward to his daily walks with its members. His favorite pastime was cooking for his family and friends. Johnny fancied himself as a cook, and was arguably one of the best in town. He'd often receive requests for dishes from friends and family alike, and he would eagerly accommodate them, usually at his own expense. The only payment he sought was the compliments his cooking would always bring. Johnny's life is celebrated by his loving and devoted family...his wife of almost 43 years, Earnestine W. Horton; two daughters, Shelia D. Horton and Theresa Horton Wilkins (Randle) of Memphis; two sons, Anthony L. Horton (Corliss) of Memphis, and Stanley Horton (Carolyn) of Marietta, GA; and one brother, McKinley Horton. A devoted grandfather, his legacy includes Kendra O. Talley, Raven N. Boyce, Anthony L. Horton II, Anderson L. Horton, Spencer Alexander Horton, and Austin L. Horton. He also leaves several sisters and brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close personal friends who all loved "Bill" dearly. Funeral services will be held at Salem-Gilfield Missionary Baptist Church, 3176 Kimball, Memphis, on Saturday, April 26 at 12 noon, to be preceded by a Memorial service from 11 a.m. until 12 noon.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

To the Horton Family, you have my deepest sympathy. Mr. Bill was my neighbor, and I enjoyed all the times that I would walk across the street or he would walk over, just to see how things were going. Mr. Bill was a good hearted person and I will always remember him in my heart. I always felt safe when I lefted my home, because I knew he would look out for me. Mrs. Earnestine may God keep you in his prayers and bless each and everyone of you.
