Edward Daniels Obituary

Edward Daniels

Salisbury, NH - Edward William Daniels, 71, of Salisbury N.H., passed away on June 28, 2024, at Elliott Hospital in Manchester N.H. Mr. Daniels was born on July 28, 1952, in Nashua, N.H. He was the son of the late Arthur C. and Florence B. Daniels of Nashua. Ed was a longtime Salisbury resident.

He was a 1970 graduate of Nashua High School and a 1974 graduate of the University of New Hampshire, where he received a BA degree in Ancient History/Greek Classics. While at UNH he threw the hammer weight, as a member of the men's track & field team. He also earned a master's degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island.

For more than three decades, he served as a Librarian for the student population and faculty at the Southern New Hampshire University (FKA New Hampshire College) Shapiro Library in Manchester. During his tenure he became a full Professor. Prior to retiring he was awarded Professor Emeritus status. During his last decade of service, he was responsible for managing the SNHU Online Student Library Services program, which provides information services to a global student population. After retiring, he returned for a year to serve as interim Dean of the library system.

Ed also served as a board of directors' member for the Katie Bentley Lilac Project, a Salisbury NH non-profit organization that provides ways for individuals, institutions, schools, and municipalities to promote the love of lilacs in America.

His passion for throwing the hammer continued throughout his adult years. He participated in many USATF (USA Track & Field) Masters track and field local, regional, national, and international adult competitions.

Combined with his competitive throwing, Ed had a 52 year-long track & field career as a coach, meet manager, official and NHIAA (New Hampshire Interscholastic Athlete Association) committee member. He coached student-athletes at Oyster River, Raymond and Alvirne High Schools.

In 2019 he completed 37 years as assistant track coach at Londonderry High School. He developed student-athletes in a variety of events including jumps, sprints, hurdles, relays, decathlons and the weight throws. Among his student-athletes were many individual class champions, and New Hampshire state champions.

When SNHU initiated a Women's Track & Field program in 2014, Ed served as volunteer coach in the hammer and weight throwing events. In 2016 he became the Women's Track & Field team throws coach. He developed two NCAA All-Americans who individually excelled at the shot put and javelin. Ed gifted SNHU with an endowment that provides budget resources to fund a women's team throws coach position for many years.

He loved working with all his athletes, as he helped them reach and exceed their goals, while focusing on proper technique, physical conditioning, mental preparation, practice routines and goal setting.

Ed enjoyed playing golf. He participated in many charity and fundraising tournaments. On the links, he competed against his brothers and cousins, enjoying the advantage of often playing from the middle of the fairways, while they benefited from his generosity, when he frequently conceded their two-foot putts. He enjoyed summer golf trips to southern California, Michigan, Minnesota, Colorado, and Nova Scotia/Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Ed is survived by three brothers, a sister, many cousins and two nieces. Charles (Jeannie) Daniels and their two daughters, Ann Marie Daniels, Robert Daniels, and Paul Daniels.

Internment services will be private with a "celebration of life" for Ed to be held at a later date.

It was an honor to have known Ed while he worked at Raymond Junior and High school Library. He could play a mean guitar, and we sang a few songs together back in the day. He was a gentle man who deserved the best life had to offer. I hope he experienced much joy in his life for he certainly deserved it.

Ed and I worked together for almost four years at SNHU. In that brief time, I got to know Ed well and had the utmost respect for him. Ed was always friendly and generous with his time. You could count on him for support and sagely wisdom. Thank you so much for everything, Ed. You will be missed greatly, but never forgotten. Rest in peace, friend

I've known Ed since I was in high school, and it's so hard to believe I won't be seeing him at meets anymore. He was always helpful, a joy to have with us, and often times the calming voice of reason we needed (especially during stressful moments!). I am grateful we had the opportunity to work alongside and learn from him for many years. I will truly miss Ed!

My good friend and hammer competitor will be missed by many of us who were fortunate to have known what a great guy and terrific ambassador of Masters throwing
I competed with him many times over decades and found his passion and great sportsmanship were infectious.
I personally am saddened and will always remember him staying at the ranch in Montana on his way back from nationals
Bless all the memories.

Ed hired me at Shapiro Library in 1988. He was a great boss and coworker. I tried to email him about extending his library access, on my last day there, minutes before I got the word he was gone . I will remember him very kindly.

..We were all shocked and greatly saddened to receive this news of Ed's passing. We considered him a great family friend. He was without question the coach and mentor primarily responsible for our 2 sons success in their track and field endeavors. An especially fond memory is that after each weeks practice session with Danny, he'd get out his Masters discus. They then took 3 competition throws. Ed was undefeated Dan's freshman year. He only lost once Dan's sophomore year, but it was getting close. Dan won about 70% of the time his junior year, and then was undefeated when a senior. Ed loved it. He knew he was really winning too; that was the special relationship he fostered in all the athletes he coached. How lucky we were to have known him .

The last time y husband and I saw Ed was in Toronto at North American and Caribbean Masters Track and Field Outdoor Championships in 2019. The first time we met him was in 2018 in Surry, BC at the Canadian Outdoor Masters Track and Field Championships. He helped me work on how to throw the Weight Throw, as that was my first summer of throwing as a Masters athlete while I was 65 years old!

We will miss his quick humor and kind spirit. May he rest in our Lords arms while wrapped in Peace and Love.

Ed was a truly “gentle” man. I can’t recall a time when he didn’t have a smile. NH Track & Field has lost a legend, and his passing leaves a great void in the lives of those who knew him. Rest in peace, Ed.

Coach Daniels was a light for me during my four years with SNHU T&F. He dedicated every ounce of time he had into the throws team. He taught me hammer/weight and showed up every day with passion and positivity. His passion for hammer became mine. Coach Daniels was kind and caring on and off the field. I am so grateful to have had him as a coach/mentor and for everything he did for me and the SNHU throws program. It was honor to know you, you will be greatly missed.

I had the pleasure of working with and getting to know Ed while I worked as College Librarian at Saint Anselm College. We had some good laughs and productive projects during my eight years in Manchester. I'll always remember Ed's passion for track and field!

A true pleasure having Ed work as part of cross country timing team for many years! He will be missed. Rest in peace my friend!

So sorry to hear of Ed's passing. I remember him as a very kind and gentle person. When I was a student at Nashua High, I greatly appreciated the times when he would give me rides for track practice on cold winter's days because my family did not have a car. As the years went by, having an unplanned meeting with him was always a joyful blessing. There are too few like Ed in the world today. He will be missed. God bless him and his loved ones.

Thinking of all of you and he will be missed. So thankful that our daughter was guided by him this past year in track , she learned so much from him and has said it often . Last year she was at her Meet of Champions a very cold rainy day and he offered up his gloves to her , and umbrella , and helped guide her and she made it to finals that day in javelin. She had a great first year at SNHU on the track team and I attribute that to his guidance , knowledge, and determination to help her do her best. I will miss seeing him at the meets and listening to him help our daughter. Although our time with him was not long enough beyond thankful for his strength and perseverance and I know he will continue to look over everyone and the knowledge he shared over the years will carry on in so many. God Bless all of you, and prayers for strength for family, friends and for everyone’s paths that have crossed with Ed. He will be missed.

Ed was an incredible official, fair and knowledgeable and always willing to help teach athletes about the sport. He took many of us under his wing to grow the sport as well. When USATF added women’s weight throw for high school, he ran clinics and then officiated meets for some of us to qualify. It was because of Mr Daniels that many of us were able to experience a Nationals competition, and one of the highlights of my own high school throwing career. I will remember forever how happy he was for me when I won my state championship in Shot Put. Moreover, I will always remember he was one of the first to console us after the death of our coach, Pauline Albert. He was a wonderful man and an incredible champion for track and field. Please accept my condolences and deep gratitude for being able to know him.
