Anthony Cappuccio Obituary

Anthony Rudolph Cappuccio

On February 9, 2021, while listening to Frank Sinatra croon In the Still of the Night, Anthony Rudolph Cappuccio passed away at age 93 surrounded by his loving family and holding hands with the love-of-his-life, his wife of 68 years, Marie. Anthony always said he fell in love with his wife at first sight and his favorite thing to do was sing to her and dance with her. Often called the "smartest man I've ever known" by friends and foes alike, Anthony left Hammonton, NJ at 17 years old to complete a degree in Chemical Engineering from MIT. While there, he discovered there was never a puzzle he could not solve. His love of America was evident in his service as First Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. While he was the engineer responsible for extending the Japanese World War Two Suwon Airstrip for U.S. Air Force Jets, and spent 13 months freezing in a tent in Korea, Anthony found he did not love living in tents and, after his service, made it a point to never go camping.

Upon marrying his wife Marie, Anthony had a very successful career in Chemical Engineering. He traveled the world, achieving one million flying miles, and won numerous awards, including those from the American Chemical Society. When Anthony would come home from work, Marie would ask him what he wanted for dinner and he would always say "surprise me". Not one to remain idle, Anthony wrote a book during his retirement, achieved a hole-in-one at golf, avidly read history books, and maintained his wicked humor that made him the light of the party. He loved laughter-filled lunches with his son Ron, hugs from his daughter Marie, his daughter-in-law Susan's fabulous French toast and sense of humor, existential conversations with his grandson RJ, fixing things while cursing in Italian with his granddaughter Sondra Nicole (and sneaking in football time), man cave time with his good friend, Les Vail, and quiet time with Marc Zangwill.

After many years living in Skidaway Island, Georgia, Anthony & Marie returned to New Jersey and resided in Cherry Hill. Although Anthony joked he would pass after the Philadelphia Eagles finally won the SuperBowl, his purpose on earth was not done. Anthony was diagnosed with Lewy Bodies Dementia, the one puzzle he could never solve, and spent the remainder of his life living with his wife Marie, his granddaughter Sondra Nicole, and his friend, Les. In his final days, Anthony kept laughing, listened to Bing Crosby, tapped to Danny Kay, and sang along with Frank Sinatra. When asked what he wanted his obituary to say, Anthony told his granddaughter "surprise me". He passed at 7:47 PM - the last flight he would ever take, surpassing his million miles on earth, heading into Heaven to join his parents, sister, and grandmother, Josephine. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brother (Robert Cappuccio) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Uncle Anthony was, in my mind, one of the most intelectual people I've come to know. My oldest memory of him goes back over 60 years. We had an reel type lawn mower that you pushed by hand. He figured out a way to attach a gasoline engine to it. That old engine probably killed more mosquitoes than originaly planned but it also did a number on the lawn! As teenagers he liked to challenge all of the young cousins on the issues of the day just to make you think about your own thoughts. Now we will remember the good times.RIP.
