Joel Mott Obituary

Joel A. Mott, Jr.

AGE: 87 • Ocean City

Joel A.Mott, Jr., of Ocean City, NJ. We've said our last good byes to our beloved Joel Allen Mott, Jr. who passed away on Saturday, April 14th at the age of 87. Joel was one of those unique men, a character in all the right sense of the word.

A lawyer. A Republican. A Mason. A member of the Kiwanis. But Joel was not someone that you could put in a box, for he would not stand for it and he certainly would not fit in any one box. Joel was a staunch conservative, yet few men fought harder for his fellow man and still fewer would stand alongside the underdog no matter the circumstances. Joel was a force to be reckoned with, always ready to take on the crusade of right. Born March 26, 1925. Joel attended Washington College in Maryland and Temple University's School of Law where he received his JD degree in 1947. Joel was preparing to celebrate his 60th anniversary of marriage with Mildred Langer this September. The two of them have enjoyed raising five children (Joel III, Jennifer, James, Jessica and Jefferson) and have also had the pleasure of watching their eight grandchildren grow up as well as six great grandchildren. Joel's legal career spanned 40 years, mostly in Ocean City. He also was named a NJ State Appellate Judge where he served 8 years. And if that wasn't enough, he found time to build condominiums and 30 homes in Ocean City, including the development of the Clubhouse Lagoon near 34th street. Joel was an avid traveler and never visited a country he didn't like. His unique language 'skills' were a source of great embarrassment to Mildred, but Joel spoke with such passion and joy that all who heard him somehow understood every word he said. His love of family was ultimately his defining characteristic. As successful as he was in his career, he truly excelled as the doting elder statesman of the Mott clan and as everyone's favorite grandfather.

We will all miss you greatly Joel. Thank you for the many stories, laughs and support. - Your loving family.

A memorial service is being held for Joel on Thursday, April 19, 2012 with family visitation from 10-11 am followed by a Masonic Funeral Service at 11 o'clock by Ocean City Lodge #171 F. & A. M. , followed by a Christian Service at St. Peter's United Methodist Church , Eighth Street at Central in Ocean City, NJ. I am so sad to hear about Mr. Mott's passing. I have so many memories of his quick and dry humor and his no nonsense fathering of Jessica. He was a main reason I wanted to go to Lawschool...I found him to be so full of dignity and compassion and so damn smart! We will miss him. Much love to his fabulous family.

Sending my love prayers and sympathy to Mildred and the entire Mott Family. Joel's obituary surely expresses the depth of the love and admiration that your family had for Joel. I graduated OCHS in 1978 and the next day became Joel's secretary. It was thru Joel's wisdom, kindness, patience and love for his profession that taught me the skills and knowledge I have today after 30+ years as a legal secretary in South Jersey. I had an opportunity to sit and talk with Joel about 5 months ago in his living room. He is one of the most kindest, sincere and nicest persons I have had the pleasure of knowing and working for. May God Bless Your Entire Family. Love Marla
