Matthew Bartley Obituary

BARTLEY, Matthew Brew Age 53, of Bedford Hills, New York, unexpectedly passed away on January 26, 2010. He grew up in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, and succeeded better than most at what he attempted. He graduated from Paul VI High School, University of Pennsylvania, Yale University and Columbia University School of Law. He was a National Merit Scholar. He was gifted with athletic ability and an exceptional mind. He was renowned as a patient mentor and welcome counselor to his family, business associates and friends. He had many friends, life-long and new, who will mourn his passing. His success in business led to successful careers as vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer of various corporations. He read extensively and collected books his entire life, and his collection, squeezed with an antiquarian's care into specially made shelves and storage spaces, was one of his joys and a source of admiration and amusement to those who knew him. His greatest happiness seemed to come from his marriage and his daughter, whom he doted upon. He is survived by his loving wife, Wendy, and daughter, Katherine; his mother, Ms. Janet Bartley of Voorhees, NJ; his two sisters: Brigid Bartley and Moira Harrison; and his three brothers, Kieran, Garret and Brendan and his nephew Zachary McCart. A celebration of his life was held at St Matthews Church, Bedford, NY on Sat, Jan 30.

He was our class valedictorian. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was him who would speak to us. I remember the more serious side of him. may he rest in peace. You have an angel with you always.

To the Bartley Family:

Although I hadn't seen Matt in many years, I have often thought of him. I have many fond memories of growing up with him, going through twelve years of school with him, hanging out with him. He was a very special person to me all those years ago, and I never forgot him.

My deepest sympathies to all of you.

I am so so sorry to hear about Matt's passing. I knew him during his Paul VI days, and got to know him more through our mutual friend, Ken Kaleta.
Everytime I think of him I think, "Brilliant". And he was.
God help his family through this.

I knew Matt from Paul VI and my memory immediately flashes back to him rushing down the hall with a shy smile on his face as we changed classes. I was a Freshman and he was a Sophomore, but he still became my friend. He was funny, he was genuine and he was brilliant. I am stunned and deeply saddened to hear of your loss. I will hold Matt and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

Our hearts are broken and we share your grief. Seems like yesterday I played "car, car, on floor" with him, his favorite "hi trol car" Matt-ese for highway patrol car when he was just a wee boy before even Kieran was born. Don't know why this image is stuck but it is and it was wonderful.
