Walt would have been eleven years old and I was two when we all moved from Narberth to our Westview Farms on South New Street outside West Chester. The world was in an uproar, finances were a disaster, but our farm was a safe haven and we were too young to understand grown-up concerns at the time. As he grew there was more and more work he could do on the farm. The physical and mental strength he developed served him well as a champion quarter-miler, while serving overseas in the U.S. Army, and during a long and eventful life.
During those many years together on the farm, Walt, my Uncle "Buck", was more like a big brother than an uncle. I tagged along... probably as a pain in the neck... often riding what he pulled with the old Farmall 12. Sundays would be Sunday School, Church, dinner, watching Buck build model airplanes while listening to opera from the "Met", then toasted cheese sandwiches while listening to Gene Autry on the radio. We watched each other grow and Walt was an excellent example to little tagalong.
We moved too far apart but always stayed in touch. I knew our move this month would make it more difficult but did not know I would lose him, the "big brother", advisor, my Uncle Buck.
