Marc Rhodes Obituary

Marc Bernard Rhodes

On May 8, 2020, Marc Bernard Rhodes lost his five-month battle with an aggressive and rare form of cancer. Marc was born in New York City (NY), on January 9, 1962, grew up in Evansville (IN) and spent most of his adult years living in Indianapolis (IN).

Marc will forever be remembered as a smart, charming, caring and funny father and friend, who loved his daughters immensely. Beyond his love of family, the things that defined Marc most were his love for and knowledge of music, poker and good food.

Marc's music collection spanned all genres and eras, he was an early adopter of punk and rap, and called The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Wilco and SUSTO among his very favorites. He influenced many with his intellect and passion for music, and attended hundreds of live shows, naming Prince's Purple Rain show in Cincinnati the best concert he'd seen.

His food tastes were just as diverse, having an opportunity to eat at some of the most acclaimed five-star restaurants, like 'e in Las Vegas and Alinea in Chicago. He enjoyed sushi, a good steak and barbeque, but also sought out Skyliners regularly, and was an excellent home chef too.

He was an avid and successful poker player, participating in local friendly games, but also played competitively, once elevating to the World Series of Poker main event as well as other big money and championship bracelet events in Las Vegas.

Marc loved to read (Katherine Dunn's Geek Love was his all-time favorite); watch movies (especially Kubrick), cooking competitions and historical documentaries; hike the Rocky Mountains; write poetry; and attend auto races (Indy 500, Brickyard 400, and especially the F1). Perusing Powell's Book Store in Portland (OR) was among his very favorite things to do.

Marc is survived by his father Joseph Rhodes (Ann) of Newburgh (IN), birth mother Marguerite Greenberg Lohry of Loveland (CO), daughters Abbey Koneru (Varun) and Audrey Rhodes (Adam Rodman), long-time partner Elizabeth Rhodes, stepmother Nancy Johnson (Darrell), siblings Julie Rhodes (Kyle Hendrix) and Eric Rhodes, and nephews / nieces Ansel Hendrix, Leighton and Riley Rhodes.

Marc was a 1980 graduate of William Henry Harrison High School in Evansville, and a student of University of Evansville and Indiana University. He carved a successful professional path working in the print industry, most recently as an Implementation Specialist for Avanti Systems. He made many good friends through his work over the years for Shepard Poorman, Kodak, BKD and Conveo.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for Marc later this year when coronavirus restrictions are eased. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Marc Rhodes' name to Arts Council of Indianapolis' COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund to assist musicians during the shutdown: https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/indianapolis-artist-relief-fund.

There are no words to express my sadness at hearing of Marcs passing. I worked with Marc at Shepard Poorman and since we shared an office, we spent alot of time talking. I have many fond memories of our conversations and continue to quote him to this day. He talked often of Liz and his daughters and it was obvious how proud he was of his family.
It was no secret that Bob Dylan was a favorite of Marc's and just because I knew it would get him agitated, I would tell him how much Dylan sucked as a singer. Thats all it would take to get him going!
He told me about his favorite book, Geek Love, and once I read it, it became a favorite of mine. I have him to thank for that!
We touched base periodically to catch up and he was still the same guy I worked with many years ago with the same big personality. I have many good memories of working with Marc and will remember him fondly.
I know this is a difficult time and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Marc was the best brother in law a person could ask for, married to my sister, Liz, for 32 years, Marc always made me laugh. He could tell a good story and you would hang on to every word. Marc was always loving, caring and genuinely interested in listening to people. I will miss him more than I can express in words. My love to his parents, siblings, my nieces Abbey and Audrey and to my sister. Know always, Marc loved you all, you were his world.
