Rev. Albert F. Reddy

REDDY Rev. Albert F. Reddy, S.J., age 74, professor emeritus of English literature at Fairfield University, died unexpectedly on Wednesday morning, May 14, 2003, at St. Vincent s Medical Center, Bridgeport. Father Reddy, the son of the late Albert F. and Cecilia (Mullin) Reddy, was born in Boston on June 27, 1928. After graduating from Boston College High School, he entered the Society of Jesus at Shadowbrook in Lenox, Mass., in 1945. The following four years were spent at Shadowbrook completing his novitiate and studying the classics. In 1949 he was assigned to Weston College for philosophy studies, obtaining his bachelor of arts degree in 1951, and his master s degree in 1952 from Boston College. He then taught at Fairfield Preparatory School for three years before returning to Weston College, where he spent the next four years studying theology. On June 14, 1958, he was ordained by Richard Cardinal Cushing and said his first Mass in his home parish, St. John the Evangelist, in Winthrop, Mass. After completing his theological studies, he spent a year in ascetical theology at Drongen in Belgium. He later obtained a master s degree in English from Middlebury College in Vermont, and in 1992 obtained his doctorate in English from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He began his teaching at Fairfield University in 1961, and continued teaching English until 1995. During that time he also served as a resident Jesuit in Jogues Hall. Since then, Father Reddy has continued teaching English to undergraduate students on a part-time basis. A sister, Dorothy Millerick of Winthrop, as well as four nephews and a niece, survive him. His brother, Father Thomas J. Reddy, OMI, died three years ago. The wake will be held TODAY, May 16, 2003, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 8 p.m. at St. Ignatius Residence, 86 Barlow Road, Fairfield. The funeral liturgy will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2003, in the Egan Chapel of St. Ignatius on the Fairfield campus. Burial will follow at Campion Center in Weston, Mass., at approximately 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Father Reddy s memory to the Fairfield Jesuit Community Scholarship Fund at Fairfield University, Fairfield, CT 06824.
