Herbert Wurtzel, age 94, (formerly of Bridgeport) died peacefully Sunday January 4, 2015 at his home in Pompano Beach , Florida. Mr. Wurtzel was born in Bridgeport, CT., a son of the late Jacob and Lena Wurtzel. To his core, Herbert was a leader. A leader of men as an officer in WW II, a leader in business and a leader in the community. If something needed to be done in the community, people could count on Herb to get the job done and done well. He took great pride when at the age of 90 he became an elected official in the Florida community of Pompano Beach (Democratic Committeeman). He took the job and responsibility very seriously and worked to improve things in Broward County. He was an astute businessman and was owner of Wurtzel & Gordon, Allied Food Brokers and Southern Citrus Company. Herb was a long time member of Congregation Rodeph Sholom. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Herbert lost his loving wife, Lenore, after over 60 years of marriage. She was the love of his life and he missed her every day since her passing six years ago. He is survived by his sons, Edward Wurtzel of Pompano Beach, FL., Paul Wurtzel and his wife Pam of McAllen, TX., Richard Wurtzel of New Haven, CT., adored grandchildren; David Wurtzel and his wife Jen, Andrew Wurtzel and his wife Lauren, Jeffrey Wurtzel and his wife Lauren, Lindsay Wurtzel, Katie Wurtzel and her husband Jeff Hodges, Jessica Galloso and her husband Gerson, cherished great grandchildren; Amelia Pepper Hodges, Tessa, Gregory and Taia Galloso, Zoey Mia Wurtzel, Benjamin Wurtzel , Riley and Caden Wurtzel, and by his nieces and nephews. Mr. Wurtzel was also pre deceased by his sister, Beatrice Katz. The patriarch of the Wurtzel's will be greatly missed by all his friends and family and all who knew him and loved him. Services will take place on Thursday January 8, 2015 at 1:00 PM from The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home 88 Beach Road in Fairfield, with interment following at Loyalty Cemetery on Burroughs Road. Shiva will be observed at the home of Richard Wurtzel in New Haven.
