Joan Platt Obituary

Joan Marie Platt
Joan Marie Horkheimer Platt was born in Bristol, Connecticut in 1932. She grew up in "Lordship" Stratford, Connecticut by the water. Joan was the loving daughter of Harold and Margaret Horkheimer, and loving sister to the late Robert Horkheimer.
Joan married her husband, Charles "Charlie" Platt in 1963, and together they proudly built their house in Huntington. There, they raised their two children, Amy Johnson (Gary) and Timothy Platt (Karen). Joan was an extremely devoted mother and wife.
Joan loved to be involved in all of her children's school activities and was so active at Mohegan Elementary School that they created the "Joan Platt Service Award", which she handed out to deserving children each year. She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, on the SHS Band Parents board, a member of the Women's Guild at St. Lawrence Church, a Shelton Historical Society member, the coordinator of her Stratford High School reunion committee, a board member for the Huntington Lawn Cemetery, a volunteer at Stratford Shakespeare Festival Theater, worked at the election polls, was the AARP Hospitality Chair, and so much more.
Joan was a lover of life. She loved everyone she met and had deep connections with countless people who came into her life. She was grateful to have many long friendships. From a young age, Joan was extremely artistic and creative: she loved all of the colors, flowers, and seasons. She was a talented cook and baker, famous for her sugar cookies that were cut out and sprinkled to fit the theme of any occasion. She was a positive, hard-working, energetic, and fiercely independent person, who never stopped moving.
Joan was most proud of her five grandchildren: Jake, Zach, and Dylan Johnson, and Bryan and Kevin Platt. She doted on them and supported them in all of their activities and achievements. She always said they were not only smart, but "good people" too. She was everyone's cheerleader. She was also a huge animal lover, and adored visits from her "grand-dogs."
Joan was an inspiration to us all - of how to work harder, make the most of every day, show up for those you care about, and appreciate every second. All who knew Joan were blessed to have been in her light.
Friends may greet the family at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, on Thursday from 5 to 7 PM. On Friday, all are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM, directly at St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Ave., Shelton. Burial will follow at Huntington Lawn Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory are encouraged to the charity of one's choice. Online condolences can be offered at www.riverviewfh.com .

Joan was a wonderful woman. She always put others first. She loved to volunteer and gave with all her heart. It was an honor to work along side her at Mohegan School and St. Lawrence Church. May Joan rest in peace and may her loving family feel comfort knowing she is safely home with the Lord.

I met Joan when our children attended Mohegan School. We worked on many projects together and became close friends. Joan was one of the most kind and generous people I have ever met. As said in "Wicked", "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." Deepest sympathy to Amy, Tim and family.
